Cactus Cafe Description
Down to the Cantina for something wildly different, hot and fiery, and in Loughborough of all places. Opened in 1990 Cactus has hardly ever looked back, and now is the hottest place in town for townsfolk and students alike. Plenty of music, spicy food and cool Mexican beer to quench the flames that follow seems to be a popular theme all round.
In summer the concertina doors open and it's fiesta time. Particularly impressive amongst the listed dishes is Kick Ass Chilli, a pungent plateful indeed. If that palls there's always the swordfish steak, weighing in between 8-10 ounces, chargrilled and topped with mango-lime butter with rice and a cactus salad on the side. Or if you're a roll-your-own man go for the classic fajitas, marinated and chargrilled sirloin steak, chicken or vegetables on a sizzling hot platter with peppers, cheese, onions, salsa, sour cream and guacamole, with rice and flour tortillas aplenty.
To mention wine seems something of an anticlimax but sure, there are dishes above the clamour of which the nose of a decent bottle of wine can be appreciated, and it's there in abundance.

We ate here with a large group of over twenty people and the service was excellent. We all ate from the set £8 menu not the a la carte, but each course was served promptly and at the same time. Some of the party had specific food allergies and these were catered for very well. A restaurant that is high in character and low in cost. It is an ideal location for a quiet romantic dinner or a group outing.

The Cactus Cafe is ok...it's no Chiquito's, but for a small place it provides a decent meal. Personally, I thought it was slightly pricey for what you get - myself and my boyfriend went there and it came to £35 for 1 starter and 2 mains with a couple of beers. The food is nice without a doubt, and the service is quick and friendly.
The main disappointment for me about this place though is that it is smoking throughout. We had to ask to move tables as a large party came in and sat next to us all of who were smokers...it's not what you want when you're trying to enjoy a meal!
