Cafe at Brovey Lair, The Description

Arguably one of the UK's most unusual restaurants in that it's located in the chef's own residence, Brovey Lair is a modern ranch-style home with a contemporary kitchen diner set within a south facing conservatory. There are only five glass topped tables all seating up to four guests and all with a view of the stunning gardens, which are floodlit after dark. Those who stay overnight love the tropical Cal-Mex breakfast - a UK exclusive.

Like a culinary theatre, cooking is performed using a Japanese tepan grill while guests look on in disbelief at the chef's skills. The adventurous all prime fish and seafood fusion menu is an East meets West experience with subtle spicing to lift the raw produce into another dimension. The chef's ethos is to excite not bite the palate.

The four-course set dinner varies each day and is discussed with guests prior to their visit so that, on the night, everyone gets the same food. The price includes pre-dinner tapas and post-dinner teas, coffees and special chocolates. The Good Food Guide 2009 has awarded chef Tina a 6 for cooking - the highest mark in Norfolk and equal first with Midsummer House in East Anglia. Reservations are essential and should be made at least 3 days in advance.

Limited accommodation is available.

Your Reviews of Cafe at Brovey Lair, The

Chris & Lyndia Lewis (15 June 2008)

This week we paid another visit to our favourite restaurant, The Café at Brovey Lair. Tucked away in the quiet Norfolk countryside, this place is somewhat unexpected in a part of the county better known for its pubs and takeaways. It is therefore a pleasure to be able to enjoy a proper four course meal served as always with the greatest attention to detail. In fact we always regard a visit as an evening’s entertainment rather than just a simple meal. Mike and Tina are excellent hosts and the event is stage managed to perfection. There is also the opportunity to make new friends at the bar before a meal starts and it is not uncommon for fellow diners on their fourth cup of coffee to wave you goodbye if you leave before them. We are never disappointed by the quality of food. This is invariably fresh seafood served in a style that educates as well as pleases. The wine list is well chosen and varies from the inexpensive to the exotic but all significantly better value than what is found at city restaurants. This alone would make the journey there, along country lanes, worthwhile. For those travelling a bit further there is the opportunity to stay over night and continue the experience with an equally exotic breakfast, we have not yet sampled this delight but have met several guests who recommend the experience.

Ronalee MacQueen (14 March 2007)

Tina and Mike Pemberton have created a real epicurean retreat in Norfolk with Brovey Lair. Everything-atmosphere, setting, wine, ingredients and cuisine are of the highest calibre. However, there is nothing stuffy about Brovey Lair that would normally be associated with a haute- gourmet restaurant. It is indeed, like going to the most sensational dinner party. The Pembertons quickly put their guests at ease with a convivial pre-dinner tapa-like experience at the bar area fronting their teppan grill and stove. What a delight to watch Tina finishing the starters in her beautiful kitchen while diners delight in nibbles and a nice glass of champagne or wine. This provides the opportunity for guests to quickly get to know one another or “to have eyes only” for their dinner partner.

Now for the food... seafood is the star and “from-the-boat” fresh. The palate dances with the delights of Tina’s infusion cooking and choices of seasonings. She’s inventive and creative. The soups, starters, entrees, and desserts are all signature dishes of this master of the kitchen.

Book soon before this romantic food haven is discovered by the “Chelsea-on-Sea” bunch.
