Cafe Belge - Battle Description
Most people support the notion that when it comes to restaurants, taste and quality are the two most important requirements. The Café Belge chain of small and cosy refuges certainly fits this bill well. Their ability to handle a vast Belgian menu effectively shows that they have passion and flair.
Try crispy duck salad and Belgian shrimp croquettes for a start, followed by salmon fishcakes, king sea bass with lemon, olive oil and herbs or simple wild boar and beer sausages. Mussel lovers can rejoice in Belge's variety. Waffles and Toblerone fondue help round off the meal with panache.
Belge is known for informal and courteous service. Though customers delight in the food, the beers are the real stars of the show. Canterbury and West Malling have up to a hundred in stock, whilst Battle and Bexhill carry more than fifty, from light and fruity brews to the darkest abbey beers and the popular Leffe, Guinness and Kwak.

Having no idea of Belgian cuisine and not being a lover of fish (although my husband adores all types!!) I was a little wary of this restaurant that ad been recommended by friends and family for the past year! I must say I was blown away!!! The restaurant is bright and airy with fabulous colourful art work with a quirky feel in a tin tin theme. The staff are fantastic, so friendly and helpful and I felt as though we were long lost friends!
I had goat's cheese wrapped in parma ham with a balsamic cream sauce on a bed of salad and my husband had fresh king scallops cooked oriental style in ginger and soy sauce - both were first class. My husband had one of their 50 mussel dishes - a creole mix of spicy coconuts - which I actually tried and was unbelievable! I am a mussel convert!!! I had a perfectly cooked fillet steak with béarnaise sauce, roast cherry tomatoes, parsnip crisps, salad - and pomme frites and delicious mayonnaise!! Although we were both fit to burst (the portions are oh so generous!!!) we could not resist sharing - another fine mess!! A decadent mix of fresh strawberries, meringue, vanilla ice cream, chantilly cream and strawberry sauce - a perfect end to a perfect meal!!! We enjoyed a bottle of their Rose House Champagne which was reasonably priced at £35 and was exquisite. This was my first visit to Cafe Belge and certainly will not be my last - after all we have another 49 mussel dishes to try - not forgetting their 50+ different Belgian beers!
