Cafe Belge - Canterbury Description
Most people support the notion that when it comes to restaurants, taste and quality are the two most important requirements. The Café Belge chain of small and cosy refuges certainly fits this bill well. Their ability to handle a vast Belgian menu effectively shows that they have passion and flair.
Try crispy duck salad and Belgian shrimp croquettes for a start, followed by salmon fishcakes, king sea bass with lemon, olive oil and herbs or simple wild boar and beer sausages. Mussel lovers can rejoice in Belge's variety. Waffles and Toblerone fondue help round off the meal with panache.
Belge is known for informal and courteous service. Though customers delight in the food, the beers are the real stars of the show. Canterbury and West Malling have up to a hundred in stock, whilst Battle and Bexhill carry more than fifty, from light and fruity brews to the darkest abbey beers and the popular Leffe, Guinness and Kwak.

What a fantastic experience we had had at Cafe Belge, a gem of a restaurant that I found purely by chance, yet have since discovered they have won an award for best restaurant in Kent for 2007-never has an award been more deserved. The atmosphere was fantastic. Such friendly, experienced and attentive staff-I have never drunk beer in my life but with over a hundred to choose from I could not resist. A wonderful young man assisted me in choosing a fabulous beer that tasted like a piña colada. I had Belgian shrimp croquettes to start that were simply delicious. I was tempted by everything on the menu-a rarity for a fussy eater like myself. I had decided on the special fish which was magnificent. Halibut baked in almonds with a creamy pesto sauce, tomatoes with fresh ginger, buttered new potatoes and fresh rocket - words cannot describe the taste sensation. The portions were so generous that I could not fit in a pudding - although I will be returning with friends to share their toblerone fondue with fresh fruit, cookies and marshmallows - so decadent. There was an excellent wine list and bar menu as well as an amazing range of beers. If you do nothing else in Canterbury you must visit Cafe Belge - C'est magnifiue.
