Cafe Bleu

14 Castlegate, Newark, NG24 1BG

Hard by the walls of Newark Castle where King John breathed his last is this brilliant contribution towards the life of Newark. The setting is Bohemian smart with large colourful canvasses to catch the eye and most nights an informal programme of music from a wide range. By day the Café Bleu is a brasserie but as the shadows lengthen it adopts a more formal pose and the menu changes with the mood. In general the cooking is innovative contemporary with influence from the Mediterranean.and Europe. A suitably eclectic wine list is nothing less than you'd expect.

REVIEWS OF Cafe Bleu

Angela D (5 February 2009)

I wrote an earlier review for Cafe Bleu in 2006 when I felt it could be improved on. Following on from a recent uncomplimentary review I felt I should respond having visited again recently to celebrate a special birthday. We went with a couple of friends who are well travelled. They had not been here before. I ordered a bottle of the recommended Champagne before the birthday boy returned from parking and it appeared on the table shortly afterwards. I have to say that whole evening was absolutely wonderful and our friends said it was the first time in ages they had eaten three courses and enjoyed every one so much. The atmosphere is perfect and pretty hard to find outside most cities. The bill, which as well as the Champagne also included a nice bottle of wine came to just under £200 for the four of us, which I think was perfectly reasonable. The members of staff have always been helpful here and I think if you treat other people with respect they will do the same back. A lovely birthday treat!

We have been meaning to eat at Cafe Bleu for years, and finally got round to doing so this week. I must say it was worth the wait, since our meal was exceptional for this area. Coupled with excellent service from a happy young lady with a huge smile, Bleu will certainly figure high on our list of eateries to revisit.
