Your Reviews of Cafe India

Gordon (27 February 2006)

I visited this restaurant for the first time in Feb 2006. I was eager to try this award winning establishment after hearing good comments over the years. We decided to try the downstairs buffet to give us a chance to try as many dishes as possible.

The food was pleasant but certainly not any better than my local out of town Indian buffet that has no awards or pictures of celebrities on the walls. Also the dishes were all pretty mild with no offering for those who prefer something a little hotter than mild. The choice was mainly between chicken and lamb with little for vegetarians or those with a more adventurous appetite. That said however the selection that was there, was tasty and plentiful. I particularly enjoyed the Indian lamb and vegetable stew which was well cooked and beautifully tender.

The service was a little lack lustre and not very welcoming. However when needed to order extra drinks and getting the bill etc the service was quick. There was a small error on my bill which was rectified promptly when mentioned with no fuss.

I have to agree with the previous reviews regarding the décor. It looked tired and worn and really needs freshened up. When paying city centre prices, people don’t want to be sitting next to torn wallpaper and tatty wall decorations.

All in all, I think Café India has been resting on its laurels lately and needs to recapture its old reputation for the best curry in town. With so many great restaurants in Glasgow to choose from, it’s not likely I would be in a hurry to return.

Score = 6 out of 10

I felt let down by the whole experience. The decor is really 1970s and nothing has been done to change it. The service is impersonal and no attempt was made by the waiters to make sure the food was right. And I agree with the last reviewer that the real let down is the food.
