Cafe Pacifico Description

Café Pacifico on 5 Langley Street is perhaps London's most realistically recreated Mexican cantina, and is housed in a building, which was originally used as a banana-ripening warehouse during the time when Covent Garden was still the fruit and vegetable market for London. The venue is great for a fun night out and you could easily while away a good hour or two at the well-stocked bar, before taking up a table in the restaurant.

The friendly staff liven the place up with their energy and efficiency, while the ambience is thoroughly retro, helped by the walls, which was adorned with murals and graphics collected from all over Mexico. They serve world class Margheritas, tropical cocktails and beers along with unusual tequilas and rum that are their house specialities.

On the menu, favourites such as tacos and enchiladas appear alongside modern dishes made using less typical ingredients yet keeping to the Mexican theme. Starters range from simple nachos with melted cheese to quesadillas and pan-fried tortillas with chargrilled lobster tails, papaya, roasted peppers, chilli, feta and cheddar cheese in a mango cream sauce.

Fajitas are served with a variety of fillings and other options include steaks, pork chops and grilled fish, not exactly what you think of as standard fare. Interesting vegetarian choices are spicy enchiladas or a grilled tortilla with melted cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and eaten with rice and beans.

On the dessert list, the Pacifico mud pie is definitely the way to go - frozen mocha ice cream and chocolate in a cookie crust, topped with whipped cream. To add that special finishing touch to your meal there are liqueurs like the agavero or the tequila based reserva de la famila.

This place rocks! We went there last night and had an awesome time. The sizzling fajitas were great and really good sized portions. The waitresses were friendly and really fun and yes it was noisy, it’s a Mexican cantina. Great atmosphere, great food and a really great 'different' London restaurant - I'd give it nine out of ten.

We had a bad time at Pacifico. The starters seemed pretty good, but we were constantly hassled to order the next course. The drive to get us to eat and leave was aggressive and crassly obvious, plates being whipped from our tables as we pondered another bite. The place is noisy. We had to shout to hear each other. The main courses (burritos and enchiladas) were the worst Mexican dishes I've ever seen. Microwaved rice, unseasoned sauce, processed cheese, refried (liquid and then congealed under a hot lamp) beans from hell. Just awful, we wanted to break for a cigarette before the main. We were told we couldn't leave our seats at the same time. They thought we might be runners. So insulting, so, if you go there, be warned that they will lump you in with the kind of trash they seek to attract. At that point I just told them to forget the food and that we were leaving. So they bring on the charm, or more like smarm, so we stayed to eat our third-rate canteen food. The optional service charge, which by that time, I was damned if I was going to pay wasn't optional. It was more than fifteen percent, yet we paid it. But hey, if you don't mind the kind of thing I've described and are happy to discover ways for these people to rub you up the wrong way, then dive right in. Dinner for two with weak Margheritas and no dessert or coffee cost us a lordly £70! Stay away, folks.
