Tucked away in an old alleyway, Café Rene's nondescript exterior may be slightly deceptive, but step inside to find a charming little place with an off-beat décor. Situated in a Grade II listed building, it's worth taking time off to explore the interesting interior, which includes an old well in the centre of the room, walls and ceiling peppered with bottles appearing to defy gravity, and a dimly lit cellar bar underground.

The kitchen's philosophy is summed up in these words etched on their menu 'We do not serve fast food. We serve good food as fast as we can.' So traditional dishes such as Caribbean lamb curry with gungo pea rice, poppadom, mango chutney and cucumber raita or home-made chicken and mushroom pie with a choice of potatoes and salad or fresh vegetables tick all the boxes. The speciality desperate Dan burgers are renowned, in addition to sirloin, rib eye, fillet and T-bone steaks.
 
Café Rene also plays host to various events and live DJ nights round the year.
