Cafe Rouge - Knightsbridge Description

Café Rouge has around one hundred branches throughout Britain all offering a wide range of dishes drawn from the French cuisine. Slightly less than half their branches are in or close to London. Almost inevitably the décor and design of each restaurant differs from the others, but there is a general curtsy towards La France.

Many restaurants do an excellent breakfast, or shall we say petit dejeuner, at which such delights as scrambled eggs, croque Madame, croissants and eggs Benedict make welcome appearances, and to their credit the English traditional gets top billing.

An array of hors d'oeuvres takes in classic French onion soup with a melted gruyere crouton, Café Rouge mussels in white wine, herbs, garlic and cream served with the insolent bâton du pain. Salads, tartes and sandwiches feature largely, as do baguettes and croques. Quick dishes, ideal for lunch, include smoked salmon tartlet, a mushroom penne pasta, or a creamed spinach tartlet.

Moving on to more serious stuff we find steaks, classic beef Bourguignon, and those wonderful spiced Toulouse sausages (still, however, not up to a good Cumberland sausage). No French menu would be complete without the poulet Breton, or a steak frites before moving on to the crème brûlée, the tarte citron and the crêpes filled with banana and warm chocolate sauce.

Almost invariably the coffee tastes like coffee should, something that sadly can all too often still not be said of our English restaurants, who depend too much upon technology and too little on the acquisition of a certain flair for this important conclusion to a meal.

By now we all know that the French, despite their distinctive habits when it comes to matters of satisfying the inner man, maintain a miraculous longevity of life. This is generally attributed to a number of causes, of which a measured consumption of decent wine is foremost. Café Rouge, you may be pleased to hear, encourages this with a well-chosen selection of French wines. Their price fixe lunch and meals for children, both at a very reasonable figure, also offer excellent value.

Your Reviews of Cafe Rouge - Knightsbridge

Sharon Blackridge (14 July 2004)

Well, my partner and I visited London just over a week ago (early July, 2004) and were shopping at Harrods, opposite Cafe Rouge. The restaurant looked nice enough, so we elected to have dinner there. Initially, the girl at the door stared at me as I asked, "Do you have a table?" She mumbled, "Sit where you like" so we chose a table to the rear, with four seats. She raced up immediately and asked us to sit at another table with only two seats. This was annoying as I had already asked for a table and been told we could sit anywhere. So much for that hospitality.

We ordered some bread and wine and this was pleasant enough. We then had appetisers and awaited our main courses. However, after half an hour, these had not arrived, and we were extremely hungry. So, I asked the waitress where our meals were, and she looked flustered and went downstairs to speak to someone in the kitchen. A man emerged (the owner?) and apologised that apparently, they had given our meals to two women who had arrived well after us. He claimed they had ordered exactly the same meals as us! Now, this was completely unbelievable. It is extremely unlikely that two people would order the same meals as us, at around the same time. My partner and I believe that the waitress did not know who ordered what, and took our meals there by mistake. The two women there simply grabbed our meals, as they were hungry!!

Some people are something, aren’t they?

And, guess what? The owner gave us a reduction on the bill. He took 5 pounds off the cost of the meal for our glasses of wine. We had to pay full price for the entire dinner, including the main courses which came very late as they had to start cooking them from scratch, after the mistake was discovered.

So I strongly recommend you do not ever go to Cafe Rouge in Knightsbridge. The food was nothing special, by the way, and also overpriced.
