Cafe Royal
8 Nelson Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 5AW
The term 'bistro' may not be entirely just to this new venture in Newcastle which is a blend of patisserie, restaurant and café but I'm sure you get the drift. During the day it's all pastries and the most lethal cakes with lashings of all the things everybody except the late Dr Atkins says you shouldn't have. Lunch is tasty snacks both for slimmers and those who don't give a monkey's, and is very lively. In the evening the mood cools, a transformation is effected and more sophisticated though perhaps less challenging dishes emerge as the romantic couples move in, the anniversary parties enjoy their quiet pleasures and the velvet night takes over. The Café Royal has caught the Newcastle trend in a timely fashion. The term 'bistro' may not be entirely just to this new venture in Newcastle which is a blend of patisserie, restaurant and café but I'm sure you get the drift. The Café Royal has caught the Newcastle trend in a timely fashion. For those who recall the more robust manner of entertainment in Newcastle in former years, which is still available if you know where to go, the word 'sophistication' really says it all, and it is long overdue and very welcome.

REVIEWS OF Cafe Royal
Catherall (11 July 2005)
Food superb, portions a little on the small side, service upstairs normally good, downstairs slow and very confused, therefore not recommended for a busy lunch hour.
Tamsin (2 February 2004)
Sex and the City comes to Newcastle! Without a doubt Carrie & Co. would sip the luxurious Mochas in this glamour-laden nugget of delicatessen gold, were it to relocate to the other side of the pond.
The cakes have been created and fussed over, perched in glossy display cases, simply to enable Newcastle's gorgeous crowd to drool along the polished counter.
Luckily, there are plenty of savoury temptations too, luring you into a decadent but balanced meal experience. My temptation is always to start with the patisserie, but at Cafe Royal I don't mind succumbing to the sensible bit first - mainly because it feels just as indulgent as the pudding!

Nando's - Newcastle The Gate
With quality food, friendly staff, quick service and excellent value for money, Nando's is a great place to eat. Don't expect identikit, pre-fab restaurant interiors which are usually a staple of the larger chains; each restaurant is tailored to its local surroundings and customers, offering up a unique restaurant experience to go with the equally unique taste of legendary, Portuguese, Peri-Peri chicken.
