Callans Restaurant Description
For a touch of modern dining in a classy and relaxed ambience, Callan's may be just the place you want to try, if you are visiting Ayr, specifically in the vicinity of the historic Sandgate. The newly refurbished restaurant has a very contemporary outlook, but their focus is on traditional Scottish cuisine, particularly in reviving interest in game.
Callan's uses the best of locally sourced produce, be it beef, lamb, seafood and even ice cream! Typically, expect favourites like cullen skink, haggis with neeps and tatties among the starters, although you could also go for a warm potato, pear and pecan salad in lemon and dill dressing. For the main course, the grilled smoked haddock on a bed of green vegetables with creamy Mornay sauce is especially appetising. Succumb to temptation with the dark chocolate and hazelnut cheesecake, while well chosen wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks accompany your meal perfectly.

My partner and I recently discovered Callans. Even though we are locals, we never knew it existed, but we're glad we found it. It really is a hidden gem. The food was excellent and the Cullen skink was one of the best I have ever tasted. We will definitely be back.

My husband and I dined at Callans with some friends in early springtime 2008. We loved the food and the staff. It is so refreshing to find people who really want to impress, and working hard to do so. As hoteliers in Ayr we have been sending our guests to Callans every week during the summer months, and all without exception have just loved the place with particular mention to the front of house girl-waitress as being the very best hostess. Well done to all for keeping up the standard, and making our summer visitors happy. We do need people like you in the town rather than those who just rest on their laurels. Well done Callans!
