Canela
33 Earlham Street, London, WC2H 9LS
If the name seems puzzling look to Portugal, where Canela means cinnamon, and the subtle flavour is a big draw with cinnamon sticks used to stir coffee, thereby imparting their characteristic aroma. Closer home you'd find a café with two outlets, in Covent Garden and Carnaby, great places for those who are on a budget, yet looking for something exciting on the menu. The cooking skews more towards the Brazilian and Spanish frontiers and the menu unfolds salads, quiches and sandwiches stuffed with chorizo, parmesan and roquette; grilled chicken and melted cheese with tomato, and smoked ham and brie. Main courses might feature a feijoada, black bean stew with smoked meats and served with rice and farofa, and prawns cooked with dende oil and coriander in a coconut milk and cassava sauce. If the name seems puzzling look to Portugal, where Canela means cinnamon, and the subtle flavour is a big draw with cinnamon sticks used to stir coffee, thereby imparting their characteristic aroma. REVIEWS OF Canela
Jem (1 August 2007)
This place is special. I'm sure it's not the home of five star service, although the night we went they were more than happy for us to move outside and then come back in again ten minutes later (yeah, smoking, I know). But it's certainly friendly and the food is delicious and authentic. Great caiparhinas too!

I am a big fan of Canela in Covent Garden, however this branch has far to go in terms of service. The quality of food is not bad - you just may have to wait awhile to receive your dish, which probably won't be the right one first time round - or not completely cooked - my quiche was frozen the first time I went there and the second time they brought the wrong dish altogether. When they bring out the right dish it is tasty and original, but by that point your lunch hour is nearly over and you are wondering how long it will take them to bring you the bill. (I waited 15 minutes today and finally went up to the waitress who had forgotten that I asked for it in the first place). My waitress was friendly and apologetic - but at this point it seems Canela in Soho is hugely understaffed. Not recommended.
