Capitol
24 Argyle Street, Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, CH41 6AE
For the last 11 years the Tam family have been the custodians of the torch in so far as Chinese cuisine at the Capitol is concerned. That they have been successful in doing this is borne out by the clutch of awards which have come their way. Occupying a magnificent site in Hamilton Square the surroundings are that of a Chinese Art Gallery. The restaurant kitchens are spotless, a positive incitement to eat and you can start with plates of dim sum at £18.95 before moving on to the customary wide range. I was particularly taken with the lamb in Mongolian style, a slightly sweet and hot dish that had a richness to it which left me ready for the sweet and sour fillet of fish. I am one of these heathen people that like a savoury at the end of a meal in Chinese as well as English, so a quarter of crispy Peking duck just rounded things off properly for me.For the last 11 years the Tam family have been the custodians of the torch in so far as Chinese cuisine at the Capitol is concerned. I am one of these heathen people that like a savoury at the end of a meal in Chinese as well as English, so a quarter of crispy Peking duck just rounded things off properly for me. When asking for this I get far more eyebrows raised in Western restaurants than Oriental. Perhaps the latter are immune to the vagaries of the Brits.

REVIEWS OF Capitol
Don (25 June 2007)
Occupying a near corner site in Hamilton Square the surroundings are that of a Chinese Art Gallery with a mixture of eastern and western music, dim lighting fit for a romantic candle lit courting couple of any age. I lived and worked on the Wirral for eleven years and my first visit to a Chinese restaurant was the Capitol in Hamilton Square. During my time there I dined at the restaurant several times, always with friends and family because both cuisine and staff there were excellent. I find all the staff polite, sensitive to needs of all guests with smile, talkative and they make sure you were completely satisfied with the services.
There is a customary wide range of cuisine dishes and the lamb is particularly tender that melt on your tongue sending tingles down your pallet. My favourite in any Chinese Restaurants was always the sweet and sour king prawn and fried rice but you know, I like to experiment and I normally tried as many dishes for the experience, the pleasure and taste of good food and you know, unlike some restaurants I could mention. In a Chinese restaurant I never feel restricted with my experiments.
In 2000 I recalled inviting my family and friends from Birmingham to celebrate with me my passing out of John Moores’ University where I studied for my degree. It was an emotional time, and we were two hours late getting through the tunnel and having to take a long detour due to traffic. They kept the restaurant open for two hours well after closing time, just for us. They were really impressed with the service, the food and the delightfulness of the presentation.
I think that if you are ever in Birkenhead, do please give the Capitol a long stay whether for lunch or evening meal, you won’t be disappointed. Oh, I just wanted you to know that I’m taking my fiancé there, all the way from Staffordshire in the Midlands during the weekend to celebrate her birthday, hope to see you there! Eat well.
