Captain's Table, The Description

A place with an excellent reputation for good value. One could commence with the samosas of ham, black pudding and apple with a lentil dressing and progress comfortably to the fillet of cod with a parsley cream sauce, trying to forget that in all likelihood it never swam in British territorial waters, ending up with a poached pear and ginger ice cream. House wine from £8.95.

Your Reviews of Captain's Table, The

Fred Nelson (6 August 2008)

My wife and I ate at The Captain’s Table on Tuesday at 7pm. We were the first in the restaurant whilst we were there six other people came in over the next hour and a half. The food was what I would describe as French bistro standard – the cooking was okay but not accomplished. It was perfectly adequate at around £15 per head - our bill was £25 per head for a starter each, a main and a glass of average, non-specified red wine. Atmosphere is lacking and there is a slightly musty smell. The service was okay although a smile would go a long way when you are paying and maybe even a ‘did you enjoy your meal’ rather than a personal conversation in French between the two staff. It was not great overall.

Louisa Davies (25 April 2008)

Two friends and I had dinner at The Captain's Table a couple of weeks back. The French cooking is great with excellent local produce. The atmosphere was charming and the food delicious and unpretentious - I almost felt I was in France. My only slight critique is that some of the young staff need to get a better understanding of the dishes on the menu, but they were so apologetic when they couldn't answer questions, that all was forgiven.
