Carnevale Restaurant

135 Whitecross Street, London, EC1Y 8JL

At one time, vegetarians might have been laughed out of any self respecting pub in London but times have changed drastically now and there are restaurants such as Carnevale which have completely turned around the face of vegetarianism in the UK. Located on White Cross Street in the trendy Hoxton area, this small restaurant is well known for its fresh and tasty fare. Whatever culinary beliefs you might follow, a visit is guaranteed to make you come back for more, either alone or with friends for a quick bite. Sandwiches and salads are of course popular, but if you're looking for a proper meal, then start with a toasted brioche with soft poached egg, spinach and wild mushroom followed by breaded aubergine stuffed with smoked mozzarella and ricotta, Romesco sauce and green beans.

They also have a takeaway service and their own deli out front.

REVIEWS OF Carnevale Restaurant

JK (19 April 2010)

It takes skill not to rely on meat to provide flavour and texture, something many chefs don't seem to realise and I'm somewhat sick of 'mainstream' restaurants offering mushroom risotto, goat's cheese tart and pasta as the vegetarian option, often badly cooked. Having said that, vegetarian places too often serve stodgy bland food so I was extremely pleased to discover Carnevale. I'm a foodie who is vegetarian, not a smug ascetic with no taste buds, and Carnevale was a breath of fresh air. My two meat-eating dining companions and I all thought it was excellent. Service was friendly and relaxed and we lingered over our meal all evening. It's a small space so the tables are cosy, but everyone is friendly. It's a superb little place and I like it that it's tucked away so you feel as if you've discovered it. I highly recommend it - and I don't say that about many restaurants!

I've eaten here many times and love it. I'm not vegetarian and wouldn't normally choose a place that was, but the food here is so full of flavour I never feel there's something missing. I've taken groups of people on more than one occasion and they've always enjoyed it. Even if you're not going there for a meal, if you're passing by get a sandwich, salad or takeaway dish from the deli bar at the front.
