Cay Tre
301 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LA
Vietnamese cuisine may not have gained the popularity that its other Oriental siblings have in the West, but it's on its way there, and restaurants such as Cay Tre only reinforce the fact with a great deal of culinary resonance. Friendly staff members make you feel at ease while you ponder over the menu, wondering what to choose although helpful descriptions besides the Vietnamese names might make your task easier. The à la carte is extensive and soup lovers might want to try the Hanoi rice vermicelli with shredded chicken, sliced omelette and lean pork and herbs in a fragrant knotweed soup. Starters reveal options such as a wicked fluffy fishcake on lemongrass stalk or pounded prawns on sesame bread with sweet chilli vinaigrette sauce.Vietnamese cuisine may not have gained the popularity that its other Oriental siblings have in the West, but it's on its way there, and restaurants such as Cay Tre only reinforce the fact with a great deal of culinary resonance. Starters reveal options such as a wicked fluffy fishcake on lemongrass stalk or pounded prawns on sesame bread with sweet chilli vinaigrette sauce. For main course, you could try the slow cooked Mekong catfish in a clay pot or maybe pan broiled lamb with Vietnamese rice wine and five spices. Wines have been compiled by Malcolm Gluck and match the food expertly.

REVIEWS OF Cay Tre
Richard (7 July 2007)
Really good Vietnamese cuisine with a quality that you can’t find outside Vietnam. I think this is the only Vietnamese restaurant that offers real family and special feast dishes in London. The ingredients used there are top quality with all the freshness and juicy taste that you couldn't find anywhere else.
The Saigon Torch Pork Belly was amazing. I didn’t think I would like pork belly but after my Vietnamese friend told me it is the most loved dishes in every Vietnamese home, I decided to try it and it is now my fvourite pork dish ever.
The wine list is really decent, which is handpicked by Malcolm Gluck, a wine critic who is well known for his "superplonk" philosophy. Every bottle is a really value and a good companion to the suggested dish.
Verdict: Best for Vietnamese Food, top-ranking for wine list but service needed to be improved. I think this maybe because of its popularity. Try to book a table before you go or you will be waiting for ages.

Fantastic Vietnamese food with serious menu, offering a high end food in a trendy atmosphere. What I like here is that they have dishes which you can hardly find in the nearby Vietnamese restaurant in Kingsland Road but only in Vietnam. Wine list was a buzz with selection of Malcolm Gluck, the famous wine correspondent from the Guardian.
The must try dishes: cognac lu lac shaking beef fillet mignon; quail curry with stewed okra; oven baked mackerel wrapped in banana leaf; Vietnamese chicken royale; sea snail with knotweed; Mekong catfish in claypot; wine to try - Germany Riesling and Pinot Noir New Zealand.
