Centotre Description

It might be tempting to think that there already enough Italian restaurants in Edinburgh, but Centotre is one with a difference, invoking as it does the New York influence. Set in the grandiose surroundings of a former bank on George Street it is run by Victor Contini and his wife Carina, who have broken away from the family base of Valvona and Crolla, still run by Philip and Mary Contini. The format is much the same with a night and day café, bar and take-away food store and deli.

A spacious dining room offers a menu with dishes that, whilst traditional, enjoy imaginative and careful preparation. The prosciutto di Parma for instance contains real quality ingredients and their pizzas are aromatic with a smokey flavour, and elegantly thin. Fresh Italian gelati are a real joy and the cheeses provide a mouthwatering selection of all that is best from Italy. An Italian wine list makes no compromises and mine host will welcome the opportunity to address any difficulties you may have over making a choice from this galaxy.

Given the standards, cheerful and efficient service, and genuine desire to please, Centotre is heading to be in a class of its own.

Your Reviews of Centotre

Dan (29 May 2008)

I found this restaurant to be very disappointing. The service I received was a disgrace. The manager was seen shouting at a member of staff right beside our table. I did not feel comfortable and although the food was decent, it was overpriced.

Cills (6 May 2008)

I agree with the previous review. My party of fourteen arrived at this restaurant and our first impression was good - the interior of the building looked great. Unfortunately, the rest of the night was disappointing. The food was expensive but we would have happily paid the higher rates, given the location. The lasagne was overcooked and when a substitute was provided it was bland and presented with tin foil around the edge. The pizza base was dry and actually split in half. There was no sauce on the goat’s cheese pizza, just crumbled cheese and lots of rocket. When only three of us could stomach eating their dinner, I complained to our nice waiter and asked to speak to the manager. After a fifteen minute wait she came over and I explained our disappointment. She did not apologise and went to see the owner. When she returned she explained that was the way food was served here, but she agreed to discount our meal in the end. I left the restaurant hungry and disappointed.
