Centotre

103 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3ES

It might be tempting to think that there already enough Italian restaurants in Edinburgh, but set in the grandiose surroundings of a former bank on George Street, Centotre is one with a difference. Victor and Carina Contini have created a bright and smart food destination where food is described as a labour of love and the cooking is clear and simple with much depending on fresh and authentic ingredients imported from Milan. A spacious dining room offers a menu with dishes that, whilst traditional, enjoy imaginative and careful preparation, take the Florentine style steak, for instance, or the Scottish sea bass fillets and an imaginative range of pizzas. Fresh Italian gelati are a real joy and the cheeses provide a delectable selection of all that is best from Italy.

Handpicked by Victor himself, the Italian wine list from his extended family of wine producers makes no compromise and your host will welcome the opportunity to address any difficulties you may have over making a choice. Given the standards, cheerful and efficient service, and genuine desire to please, Centotre is heading to be in a class of its own.

REVIEWS OF Centotre

Veronica McNulty (12 August 2009)

I would like to praise Centotre for the fantastic service and treatment I received on a recent visit with my young daughter. I have certain medical conditions, one of which means I cannot eat anything with gluten in it. I informed the waitress of this and the chef and manager pulled together a fabulous gluten free meal for me. I found the staff very courteous, helpful and eager to ensure that we enjoyed our meal. Nothing seemed too much to ask. My daughter is a very picky eater, but thanks to the manager, chef and staff, she was catered for, thus my daughter had a great meal and thoroughly enjoyed herself. She was given a little goody bag of pencils and a picture to colour in. I felt that this was the best Italian meal I had eaten outside of Italy to be very honest. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Italian food, great wine, and good coffee. The service was flawless, the staff polite and always ready to assist, even though the restaurant was very busy we received our meal in good time and the staff were always smiling.

We chose Centotre for its location and because my mum who was visiting, was keen to try it. Our first impressions were very favourable. It was clear they were busy but we still felt that we had their attention and they found us a table in five minutes.

The food was great but a little pricey. I had a very simple pasta with a tomato sauce and it was perfect. My mum and brother were similarly impressed with their respective shrimp and steak. The only negative points were that when our starters arrived they were almost immediately followed by our mains. Delicious as they were, we weren't going to gobble them down in the space of thirty seconds and so we asked the waitress to take them away until we were ready and she did. I think this was really just a mistake perhaps due to inexperience.

My brother had requested his steak medium to well done, but was informed that they only did it medium rare. He relented and enjoyed it very much, so maybe it was a lesson learned.

Our visit was very enjoyable and I will definetely be back. Readers might also be interested to know that there is a private dining room downstairs which could be enticing, but then you'd miss out on the great atmosphere upstairs.
