Chalice, The Description

This restaurant is temporarily closed.

One of Bury St Edmunds's best kept secrets, this restaurant is tucked away in the quiet part of Cannon Street but just a few minutes' walk from the town centre. A cosy, converted Victorian cottage and bakery - the original bakers' oven remains - with a delightful courtyard garden, which provides the perfect back drop for an intimate dinner for two or a party gathering.

Lovely, large scrubbed pine tables, comfortable seating, soft lighting and gentle background music create a relaxing environment. An excellent selection of wines complements the diverse, ever-changing a la carte menu celebrating the best of fresh, seasonal food, cooked to order and served by attentive and friendly staff.

Regular special events evenings include 'Just Desserts', when a choice of main course is the prelude to the 'eat until defeat' challenge of a wide selection of mouth-watering desserts at £15.50 per head. 'Fishy Feast' evenings offer a delicious choice of fresh fish dishes from a table d'hote menu for only £18.50 for three courses.

The micro brewery, the Old Cannon, just across the square, supplies two pint jugs of their brews to guests dining at the restaurant when a small 'walkage' rather 'corkage' charge is made, a wonderfully quirky idea much welcomed by the real ale lovers.

Your Reviews of Chalice, The

Carolyn (5 January 2009)

I fully recommend this restaurant. Excellent service, not too forced attention. The value is excellent with fresh, well cooked vegetables and dishes. I had a vegetarian dish even though I'm a meat eater and it was delicious. The atmosphere is cosy with a warm log fire. In fact, I really want to keep this one to myself. Perhaps I shouldn't tell the world about it!
