Chequers, The Description

At The Chequers they have covered in the former courtyard, creating a light and airy dining space that is ideal for the purpose. John Reid's wife, Kay, is a former home economics teacher and her touch is evident in the familiar, well-sourced and attractively served dishes that ensure The Chequers is seldom anything less than busy.

Leek parcels filled with smoked cheddar, mushrooms and onion make a tasty starter, followed by roast half shoulder of lamb with mint gravy. Once a Londoner, always so, and it therefore comes as little surprise to see Fuller's excellent ales on tap, lovingly cared for and served, with around sixteen wines available by the glass.

The food was gloriously comforting, the butternut squash tart, risotto with wild mushrooms, rocket presto topped with a poached egg, amazing treacle tart and fantastic local cheeses. The waiting staff were friendly and very accommodating.Don't ask the landlord for a late drink, though.
