Chesil Rectory, The Description
Apart from the food, The Chesil Rectory's other claim to fame is to be the oldest house in Winchester - an assertion that is not hard to believe looking at the constructional features - beamed dining areas and candlelit tables that provide a beautiful setting.
Perigord truffles and foie gras are typical examples of imported produce, while locally sourced meat and seafood based fare also features on the menu. Their dishes are a blend of classic French cuisine using a combination of specialist produce from France. Breast and confit leg of Bresse pigeon served with spicy fig chutney and its own consommé sets the pace, as does the Solent sea bass with olive and wild garlic crushed potatoes.
The wine list is top of its range, and is matched by the prices. There is a selection of decent house wines in the £15-£20 range, which could help to ease the pain a little.

Your Reviews of Chesil Rectory, The
M Faulk (24 January 2008)
I had dinner there last October and found it to be the best restaurant meal I have ever enjoyed. All the courses were delicious and so were the wines. Though its not cheap, but worth it.
James Holden (3 October 2007)
This really is one of the finest restaurants outside of London. For our dinner, we ordered the tasting menu and could not have asked for more. The ingredients and flavours combined for one of the best summer menus I have enjoyed in recent years. The closest comparison I can draw is The Capital in London, a two star Michelin restaurant. The wine list encompasses all tastes and budgets and corkage is £15 - something to be exploited. The service is warm, friendly, efficient and pleasantly discreet without the aloof superior attitude of many top class restaurants. The setting is beautiful too. All in all, it’s pretty hard to beat.
