REVIEWS OF China Sun

Donald Hinkley (3 April 2010)

China Sun is a ‘Reassuringly traditional’ and converted pub in Prestwich, which serves classic Cantonese cooking of the Western-friendly variety and on request the authentic article. The décor conform to most people’s expectations of how a Chinese restaurant should look. The menu offers the usual spare ribs and crispy chilli beef alongside dishes such as Japanese spring rolls and Thai Red curry’s. My wife and I opted for the Platter for two, for our starters, which is a mixture of ribs, wantons, spring rolls, prawn toast and crispy seaweed, we also added a portion of har kow - steamed prawn dumplings and Shumai - steamed pork dumplings to our platter. The whole platter was superbly cooked and presented. We accompanied our meal with a very nice rioja, not a wine I would normally choose but my wife’s preference, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wine for the price. For our mains I ordered Thai special noodles and my Wife ordered roast duck with stir fry Chinese vegetables and crispy noodles as a side dish. The Thai special noodles were well cooked and mixed with a generous portion of mixed meat and seafood. Most restaurants serving this kind of dish over cook the noodles, here they were just right. The duck again was cooked to perfection as were the stir fry vegetables. To finish our meal I chose a delicious and tantalizingly sweet banana fritter, which was topped with sesame seeds and served with golden syrup and Cornish ice cream. My wife was far too full from the generous portions served in the first two courses to consider a desert. The service throughout our meal was very professional with a really nice friendly edge. A superb meal and a bargain for food and wine of this standard, our bill was under £60 including tips, I would have expected to pay at least £100 in Manchester centre for food of the same quality for two people. We will be recommending China Sun to our friends.

I ate here last weekend, the staff are so friendly and the food was most impressive. I had a roast duck in a plumb and cherry sauce. I have eaten duck in Plumb sauce before but never a plumb and cherry sauce. It really was superb. The flavour left me wanting more even though the portion was larger than I normally would be able to eat. An absolute first for me, and I do eat out regularly. My friend had King Prawn in Thai red curry, a very hot dish and he said it was better than his favourite Thai restaurant in Manchester. When you think that this is a Chinese restaurant and my friend is a foodie, it’s quite something to produce food that’s better than a restaurant that specialises in that particular food. I will be recommending China Sun to all my friends.
