Churchill Arms, The

Sonya Kidney and Leo Brooke-Little are the husband and wife team that took over the Churchill Arms in 1997. Since then it has been consistently applauded by customers, guides and critics alike - even that scourge of restaurateurs, Michael Winner, proclaims it as one of his favourites. Their success and their desire to please their customers with the best of everything go hand in hand, and most importantly, it is a place to enjoy a drink and have some very good food.

The quality and the integrity of the food is something special, they support local suppliers and encourage them to seek out new produce. Consequently the menus do not stand still. There is also a great choice of beers with real ales from local breweries and always a guest ale. The wine list is imaginative and well priced with something for everyone, there is a good selection by the glass.

The constantly changing choice could include: galantine of duck with bean sprouts, orange and caper sauce; millefeuille of veal sweetbreads with creamed organic mushrooms, madeira and thyme or salt and pepper squid with tomato, gherkins and parsley aoli to start your meal. Then cod fillet with star anise sauce and deep fried ravioli of peccorino and mushroom; blade of beef with with jus and soubisse sauce or pan fried lambs' kidneys wrapped in bacon with saffron sauce and parmesan risotto

Round all of that off with sticky toffee pudding; orange cheesecake; polenta and almond cake with morello cherries or iced white and dark chocolate terrine with dark chocolate sauce.
