Cilantro at The Millennium Madejski Description

Cilantro is back and how! This fine dining restaurant of the Madejski Hotel had been closed for refurbishment and diners had to settle for their brasserie, Le Café, which no doubt served its purpose well, but was not just quite the same. Post refurbishment however, Cilantro has got back its share of patrons who love refined gourmet cuisine and it's an added bonus that the atmosphere is relaxed and intimate and not at all stuffy. The attached stadium, home of the Reading Football Club and London Irish Rugby Club, seems a most unlikely venue for a hotel such as the Madejski, but for whatever reason, the combination has struck the right note.

Cilantro's mellow lighting, muted colours, crisply starched linens and luxurious seating exemplify the stylish décor, while the new menu brings with it an exciting range of dishes. In the new a la carte, you might find delectable starters such as delicately flavoured Anjou pigeon and apricot terrine with homemade grape chutney, oak smoked salmon and quail egg with caviar and fennel salad, fine herb and spring onion risotto, or the delightfully creamy roast pumpkin soup with hazelnut crème fraiche.

Further on, main courses include Cornish lamb noisette accompanied by foie gras gratin, pomme anna and cherry vine tomatoes or a free range guinea fowl breast with hazelnuts, on grellot onions and wild mushrooms, arancini and mushroom reduction. Pan fried John Dory with seared scallops and sauce vierge; potato strudel with leek, garlic and thyme, served with roasted beetroot, tender broccoli spears or root vegetable Wellington with sauté anya potato and caramelised shallot cream complete the sumptuous list. For two people, there is a further choice between chateaubriand or Dover sole, grilled or Meunière, for many a difficult decision to make.

It would be unthinkable to skip dessert, particularly when there's a vanilla and strawberry ice cream cupola with mint salsa, Braeburn apple tart with fresh blackberries or an elder flower essence rice pudding with butternut ice cream. A delicious assortment indeed, while the selection of cheeses will also not fail to satisfy those who are looking for a savoury ending to their meal.

Your Reviews of Cilantro at The Millennium Madejski

Gerry (23 June 2009)

I had eaten at Cilantro last year and enjoyed it so much that I came back again last month. For a romantic evening you simply cannot fault the special offer of a seven course dinner, use of all the leisure facilities and a double room for the night and all for just £109.00 per couple. I know its £54.50 per person but it was less expensive than going into town and paying for a taxi. The new Cilantro is even better than the old one with softer lighting, a trendy champagne bar and very attentive service. The food was simply divine and I was well impressed with the John Dory and scallops which preceded the medallions of Cornish beef. The chef seems to know where all his produce is sourced and it wouldn't surprise me to hear that he handpicks everything himself. A fabulous meal was followed by a trip around the corner to hear some fantastic live jazz at The Jazz Cafe and the guilt was eased somewhat as we burned off some calories on the dance floor. Welcome back Cilantro, we shall return soon and often.

A bit of an odd one this. Underneath the stadium, it is entered via the lobby of the hotel. A large and sparse room, although not unpleasant. The menu was first-rate, and the food likewise. The service was also pretty good, although it was quiet evening. Transposed to another environment, the menu and food would have scored 8/10.

A let down was some of the clientele. I personally don't visit a restaurant to see and hear a large group of diners getting vocally drunk and gradually aggressive among each other. This should be stopped by front-of-house immediately. Other than that, not bad, but better can be found locally. Note that this review is based on events 18 months ago, so things may have improved.
