Clarks Description

Clark's has been a part of the Bradford scene for some time, providing consistently good food at prices that ordinary people can afford. Moreover, choices are wide and even the most fickle appetite can expect to be roused. Starters include spiced Toulouse sausage with sweet potato curry, smoked duck with mango chutney and grilled black pudding with celeriac and potato mash. Vegetable versions come in the form of goat's cheese with tarragon and honey mousse and toast. A wild mushroom, smoked haddock and Alborio rice spring roll leads a lagoon of seafood starters.

Main courses that are equally versatile invoke local produce with a grilled Barnsley chop off the bone, stuffed with pork and chive, with bubble and squeak on the side, roast saddle of rabbit filled with herb butter ands wrapped in bacon, or a risotto with sweet pepper and sun dried tomato.

Looks like they cherish their puddings in Yorkshire and a list as long as your arm includes tutti frutti rice pudding on a strawberry syrup puddle, yes, it's true, or tempura coconut bananas and bramley apples with a mango sorbet and caramel sauce, and that is before you even reach the impressive array of European and British cheeses, not forgetting of course the blessed Wensleydale.

The wine list is equally expansive, with a very well travelled list, over ten by the glass and some good house wines. To describe this as a neighbourhood restaurant is perhaps going a bit far, but it certainly serves the area well and is also well-used by the discerning from further afield.

Your Reviews of Clarks

Trevor (16 July 2007)

I had the displeasure of trying Clarks again last week. It had been three years since my last visit for a family celebration, so we thought 'let's give it another try'! Something has happened since then: one good steak out of four main courses; four poor starters, and wine selection given a miss. Although we did complain, little interest was given.

Little interest will now be given to Clarks. You've lost me, three friends and countless people I'll be sure to tell.

Have been before and been reasonably impressed. Using the combination of the table d’hote and a la carte menus our group of five chose what they required. Starters OK

A bit disappointed that the oddities offered before such as Cumberland sausage, etc not on menu.

Four out of five chose steak for their main course - despite asking which diner which steak was which they got them totally mixed up (rare to m-rares to well dones, etc, we had to cut into each one to work out which). Which meant we had to swap around vegetables which we would agree with other writers were in short supply.

Disappointments were dirty wine glasses on the table and a crème brûlée that wasn’t brûléed, which seemed to spoil what could have been an excellent meal.

Total cost £100 - overall thoughts - mediocre. Will we go back - maybe but would explore around with others first? The new decor is a bit stark and minimalist and there is a "toilet smell" somewhere near or around the entrance to the bar area which is worrying.

The waiting staff male and female ought to look at their "dress", a scruffy pair to say the least.
