Cnapan Restaurant Description
Since 1983 the Lloyds and the Coopers have run this excellent establishment between them, an example of harmony which is reflected in the ambience of this handsome town house. The interior of the house is a delight, the dining room a temple dedicated to properly presented delicious food.
Organic vegetables feature strongly. Start with an avocado filled with Stilton and cream cheese, port and sweet mango, served hot. A prime Welsh Fillet steak is served either with garlic butter or a whisky, onion and parsley sauce, though I thought it a trifle stingy to charge £2.50 extra for cooking it to your preference.
Assuming you could avoid the temptation of the selection of Welsh cheeses, including a guest Irish number, a good note upon which to finish could be the raspberry and almond tart served with a splash of amaretto and fresh cream. A simple wine list starts at £9.75 and includes a Welsh Monnow Valley white.
Fixed Dinner
- £22 (2 courses) to £27.50 (3 courses)
Your Reviews of Cnapan Restaurant
Amanda (12 January 2007)
Very friendly staff, but food for lunch seems to be quickly created on a chef's day off! Good for a quick bite with organic vegetables.
Keith Randall (31 May 2006)
Mike and Judith Cooper's small family concern is a joy to behold. Friendly (and long serving) staff are attentive at all times without being in the least obtrusive and the food is home cooking at its very best. Try the seafood chowder as a starter, or the smoked salmon and crab tart, followed by melt in the mouth Welsh Black Beef or Gressingham Duck. Vegetarian alternatives are always imaginative and tasty. Puddings? Fantastic! Does rum, dark chocolate and chestnut torte grab you? Or how about steamed marmalade sponge with an orange toffee and Cointreau sauce, or maybe a strawberry sorbet with lemon biscuit.
Drinks are very fairly priced. The rooms are cosy and whilst the en-suite shower rooms are small, they are nicely laid out (for those who prefer a bath, there is a guests bathroom provided). Breakfasts are fantastic and whether you are vegetarian or not, you MUST try the home made Glamorgan sausages!
