Coach & Horses, The Description
A consistently good global menu with a varied choice of homemade dishes makes this cottage-like pub a popular spot, a tempting start is created by their cream of butternut squash soup; warm shredded ham hock and Puy lentil salad with grain mustard or wild mushroom tortellini with mushroom cream create.
In the same vein you might follow with pork and leek sausages with mashed potato, onion marmalade and red wine jus; sautéed scallops with buttered spinach and herb cream or Scottish rib-eye steak with french fries, mushroom and tomatoes. However, desserts are their forte, with autumn berry pudding; white chocolate panna cotta; dark chocolate tart with vanilla cream or vanilla crème brûlée.
Eating is split between a small candle lit upper room and a larger dining area. The large front garden is lovely in the summer and there is an 'adult only' terrace at the rear of the pub under a majestic maple tree. The Good Pub Guide 2004 made them 'County Dining Pub of the Year', quite an accolade, and for the last four years they have been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand - an award for good food at moderate prices.
Your Reviews of Coach & Horses, The
Bruce Lambert (7 March 2006)
I went to lunch here with a small group of friends yesterday (Sunday) . There was no fixed menu - only a la carte with a reasonable but rather limited choice. The food was variable some good, some not so good, one starter very good. However the service was poor.
One of our party is a vegetarian and chose a dish on the waiter's specific recommendation. It turned out to have bacon in it (lots actually) With no apology whatsoever he took it away and 10 mins later brought a very similar dish back this time with no bacon. Instead it was so highly seasoned it was like a medium curry. It was supposed to be mushroom risotto (Takes more than 10mins to cook in my book - I wonder if it was the same dish with the bacon removed and spiced up to disguise it.)
No apologies were made at the end of the meal and no offer to compensate by subtracting this almost inedible dish form the bill. Will any of us be going again? Guess.

A delightful restaurant and bar, warm surroundings and friendly atmosphere add to the experience with wonderful food and excellent service. A rotating menu with regular new additions gives a great variety to make each visit feel unique. Whether seeking to make your meal an intimate or family affair the restaurant layout means it can accommodate both. The Coach truly is one of the best-kept secrets in Sussex.
