Company Shed, The Description

So you fancy a touch of authenticity? It doesn't come much more authentic than The Company Shed, particularly on a chilly day in winter, with the tides running fast and the wind in the landlocked rigging. Having established that the weatherworn edifice before you is your destination, clutch your bottles, cans and French rolls - well I did warn you - and enter into the world of really fresh seafood, evidence of which in various forms is all around you.

So also is Heather Haward who, with her husband Richard runs this wonderful place. Richard farms the oysters and looks after other vital supply lines. Service is very much DIY in keeping with the ambience and philosophy of the place. The seafood is simple and just undeniably wonderful, with the crabs well at the top of the list. Forget about the fripperies, no puddings, bring a flask of coffee if you must and salads are not welcome.

Oh, and on your way out bag some of the clams to take home at a mere £1 a pound.

Surely this has to be seafood heaven?

Fixed Lunch

  • £8.50 (standard seafood platter)

Not being a great seafood lover, but the wife is; I decided to treat her one Friday afternoon and suffer myself. Having found the place after stopping to ask the way from, would you believe it, the owner. We entered to find a fantastic selection of seafood as fresh as if we had just dipped in the sea that moment and pulled it all out. I ordered the platter for two; to be served a huge dish with mountains of prawns, crab, etc. We had also ordered a lobster as well and I was really gobsmacked that I enjoyed every bit, and we ate every bit as well. We will return, but with friends, so they can be gobsmacked as well. Give it a try. If you like seafood, you will love this place.

At the oyster shed, it was one of those unique dining experiences we had ever had. The look and feel of the place would not be out of place circa 1850. You know the type of place the fisherman would come straight after a heavy day of fishing. And that’s where its charm and appeal lies. Most would consider the ordering and eating of oysters to be an intimidating experience. And if you were at a posh fancy restaurant up west, I’m sure the paranoia of being watched, whilst you struggle to slurp oysters in a casual non offensive way, would lead to most people declining the experience. The beauty of the oyster shed is its informal feel and the fact it reminds you of a roadside cafe. You could happily slurp your way through mountains of seafood (at reasonable prices) and no one would bat an eyelid. I’m glad to report that alcohol including a decent bottle of wine is now on the menu. And they also have a select range of puddings. The best buy there would be the seafood platter for two. That’s a gargantuan affair. And to be honest it took four of us to eat this delectable choice of crustaceans and molluscs. I also had the pleasure of the scallops cooked in raspberry jus with asparagus and strips of bacon. If you can get over the snobbery of the no thrills look of the place then please visit this place!
