Convivio

29 Grosvenor Street, Chester, CH1 2DD

Convivio - the name may bring in images of people engaged in a friendly banter, lots of food and drink, and lively music to match the mood - yes, it's all happening here at this centrally located lounge bar and restaurant. The kitchen's philosophy is to keep things straightforward and the menu takes on an 'Italy meets Greece' approach. So get started with a plate of olives or mezzedaki with tzatziki, taramosalata, hummus and pita bread. The much loved piatto di pesce misto or the fish platter, and a Pavarotti pizza from the traditional stone oven made by an Italian 'pizzaiolo' will not fail to please those looking for rustic Italian cooking. A 32 oz T-bone steak fiorentina is another favourite that's carved at the table and there is also a wide selection of pasta dishes.

REVIEWS OF Convivio

Mark (2 September 2010)

Have been driving past Convivio for the last two years or so and as my last time in there was when it was paparazzi, I finally decided to pop in with my two mates. It was a Saturday night and as we walked through the door we all looked at each other and thought not a chance as the place was heaving and a few people waiting in the foyer for tables. An Italian chap asked us if we like a meal or just a drink. We asked how long the wait was and he replied there is no wait as we could have a drink in the lounge bar! Walked into the stunning bar and there was an excellent atmosphere complimented by a great guitarist singer. Despite the bar being busy we were greeted by the barman and ordered a drink. Ten minutes later, I'm thinking 'this is my place' as we were enjoying the music, the Italian chap came up and asked us if we wanted a table as one become available. He took our drinks and escorted us down stairs to the restaurant. What can I say as soon as our food arrived and had a taste, it reminded me of a place I went in Florence ten years ago, excellent!

R W Chester (16 August 2010)

Recently I visited Convivio on Grovesner Street after spending the majority of my life in Chester not being aware of it. I was walking past and noticed a sign outside the door with what looked to be a great offer for lunch for just £5, so I went in. I have eaten Spaghetti Carbonara all over town and in Italians across the country, but this was simply divine - the best I have ever had. My partner and I was equally impressed and decided there and then to book for an evening meal with a couple of our friends, who coincidently also did not know anything about the place. With our mouths watering and the prospect of going back it was all we could talk about the day before and we were not let down. A truly fantastic evening, great service with a smile from waiting on staff from over, great cocktails in the bar before hand and undoubtedly the best Italian food we have ever experienced in our quaint little town or anywhere for that matter.
