Cook & Barker, The

It must be at least eighteen months since I last visited the Cook and Barker and I have always enjoyed a wonderful meal there. As a treat for a soon to be celebration I decided to plan an overnight stay with an evening meal. I contacted The Cook and Barker and requested a brochure including the tariff (their web site was last updated 2006). Almost two weeks later no information had arrived. I telephoned the C and B and spoke to the manager who informed me that they only attend to post once a week, as they were busy, he then stated that my brochure had in fact been posted the previous day. Almost two weeks later and another phone call to the C and B, due to no information arriving as promised. The manager yet again stated that my request for info had been sent by post the previous day. I informed the manager that due to customer service below what you would normally expect, I was actually reluctant to stay overnight. The manager’s responded saying fair enough and that was the end of the conversation. And guess what? The info that was on its way to me has not arrived (again). I know the C and B has a very good reputation but this does not mean standards can slip and the business will keep coming. There are many other restaurants/inns out there willing to pick up the business. What a shame.

Everything about the Cook & Barker was of a very high standard. The staff were warm and welcoming, service efficient and friendly, food absolutely superb. The restaurant itself is large with well spaced out and nicely laid tables, so conversation isn't shared with every other diner in the room! It is very atmospheric with exposed original timbers and appropriate decor and furnishings, etc. The menu offered an unusual and discerning choice of meals and our food couldn't be faulted in taste, presentation or price.
