Copenhagen Corner Description
If you wish to catch all the bustle of City Hall Square, then a table by the window at Copenhagen Corner could just be the place for you. The foundations of the restaurant are right on top of the moat that surrounded Copenhagen until 1856. The simplicity of the whole place is very pleasing indeed, as there is a spacious dining area with sunlight streaming in though the roof, while rustic tiles, white walls and tables of lightwood give The Corner an affable Danish charm. The service is thoughtful and the staff are always ready to help customers decide what's best to order from the comprehensive menu.
The food is unpretentious and very reasonably priced compared to some of the costlier alternatives in Tivoli Gardens. Rest assured you will get to sample some of the best classic native cuisine there. Keep an eye open for the restaurant's traditional dishes such as fried eel with creamed cabbage and old-fashioned roasted beef with glazed pearl onions and sauce.
Denmark's famous open smørrebrød sandwiches feature there and choices might include a delicious warm fillet of plaice with mayonnaise and shrimps, gravad salmon with mustard sauce, brie with basil-flavoured honey, figs and homemade crackers, roast beef with pickles and horseradish, and three kinds of herring.
A delicious grilled Norwegian lobster, served with salad of asparagus, makes the perfect starter, others include shrimps served with lemon, dill, mayonnaise and Melba toast, or Skagen ham with melon.
The dyrlægens natmad, a combination of pork liver pâté and corned fillet of pork introduces diners to the many exciting flavours of Copenhagen Corner's food. Tartar of beef with French caviar or cured farmer's ham with Tebstrup goat's cheese provides for the palates of the more adventurous.
The main course choices are ambitious and of extraordinarily good value. Roasted multe served on tempered summer pickles with garlic and dry tomatoes, and plaice from Frederikshavn with butter sauce, white potatoes and cucumber salad, all vie for attention. The meat dishes, although not always equal to the fish, are tasty and tender.
A well-developed drinks list offers choices of champagne, beer as well as carefully chosen wines. The Danish koldskål served with crispy chocolate, sherbet of buttermilk and vanilla is worth a visit in its own right, and a selection of cheeses, from both small and large dairies is always available. Children have their own menu with various suggestions.
Customers can order takeaways on the internet, so that the food is waiting to be picked up when they come by.
