Cottons - Islington

70 Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4QP

Cottons in Islington is one of those restaurants that are tropical in appearance, but cosmopolitan in attitude, while their Caribbean cuisine is a definite draw for those looking for a night out with friends and fun on their agenda. Downstairs there's another popular hotspot, the Rhum Jungle, a basement bar and lounge where you can chill out with some exciting cocktails and rums from all over the world. Back in the restaurant, there is a choice of interesting starters such as ackee and salt fish tart with sorrel mayo and guava dressing or jerk beef fillets on a salad of mixed leaves, avocado and mango. Main courses could include curried goat with rice and peas or Trinidadian mixed fish curry with yam and sweet peppers.

REVIEWS OF Cottons - Islington

Magicpixie (9 April 2009)

It was initially promising, when one of the waiters came out to us while we were reading the menu to tell us what time they opened. Unfortunately, when we arrived later, we were greeted by a rather shirty waitress who informed us that we would only have an hour before it was fully booked, and showed us to a table in a very empty and unexciting restaurant. The service from the other waiters was good but the food was quite average for the price. An hour and a half later, only one other table was filled, so not sure where all the other bookings had got to. When the bill arrived, I declined to pay the 12.5% service charge, as I will decide myself who I tip. The evening was then ruined by the same waitress from earlier who questioned this and proceeded to argue and debate the point, despite my telling her she was now wasting her time. My guest was appalled at her rudeness, and we left, without paying the service charge, having left a tip with the waiter who had actually served us. I will not eat there again, and perhaps should have taken notice of the previous review. Restaurant managers should be aware that it is the customer's right to leave a tip to whomever they choose, and there should be no further argument when that right is exercised.

Alba (13 December 2008)

We went to Cottons - Islington last Saturday and had a great time. They have introduced a new menu for December, and it all looks pretty festive. The cocktails were excellent and the food and service were good. After dinner we went to the club/lounge where we had some more drinks, and danced till late. All in all, we had a great night out; one to be repeated.
