Courtyard Restaurant Description

I must confess that Barrow in Furness is not the sort of place my mind would click to when confronted with the need for a modern and elegant hotel with restaurant to match. This is, of course, pure prejudice, for which I grovel, but it does give me the opportunity to put the matter to rights.

Described as the jewel in the crown of Furness, the claim is a fair one. From the moment you walk in and hear the piano tinkling away in the conservatory bar, you realise that this is no ordinary country house hotel.

A fairly stiff dress code prevails, but somehow it seems to be the least one can do to match the spotless linen, sparkling glassware and generally immaculate surroundings.

Cumbria is awash with wonderful produce from the hills and lakes. Beef reared on the fells have a flavour and firmness of meat all their own, and rack of Cumbrian lamb has to be a gourmet delicacy when dealt with properly in the kitchen - which here, needless to say, it is.

Add Cartmel smoked duck breast and native black bream to the equation and your hand may well be reaching for the phone.

Service is as immaculate as everything else, and an extensive wine cellar works hand in glove with the menu.

Your Reviews of Courtyard Restaurant

Ian Sanders (21 September 2005)

I spent 2 nights a week at the Clarence for almost 8 months last year. Whilst there I could not fault the service, the staff and certainly not the food. I revisited last Christmas and will be doing so again this year. I recommend this Hotel to anyone who appreciates excellent food, with excellent service that is efficient without being overbearing.

Rachael Entwistle (27 September 2004)

I recently attended the above restaurant as a member of an informal party and was appalled at the level of service received. The owner of the restaurant criticised a neighbouring group's celebrations and attempts to take photographs. I have submitted a complaint to the restaurant but have not as yet received a response.

As a Group Marketing and Communications Director for a large organisation in Cheshire I am fortunate in that I can put my money where my mouth is. I control the corporate hospitality budget for our organisation as well as having strong network links with several large organisations in and around the North West. I will be using these links to express my opinion.

I cannot fathom the reasoning behind Clarence House's misguided business decision as the hospitality trade lives and breathes via referrals and word of mouth. I can only hope they learn by this mistake through loss of trade from conference trade in the future.
