Crab at Chieveley, The Description

One is left in little doubt from the moment of arrival that at The Crab seafood rules. Just make sure you don't trip over the lobster pots as you walk from the car park. In an age when no self-respecting restaurant regards itself as being unable to field fresh fish every day, however far it may be from the briny, there is a daily delivery from Brixham to the Crab that results in a menu of undoubted and welcome bias. However, as is the way of things, committed carnivores are not overlooked.

Mussels, oysters, lobster, crab, langoustines all make regular appearances in a variety of forms. The Galway smoked salmon is well recommended, followed perhaps by monkfish wrapped in Parma ham with tomato mash. As should be the case with most fish dishes the amount of attention in the preparation is designed to retain the true taste, leaving the subject to speak for itself, probably a contributory factor to the Restaurant Remy Award for the Region which came their way in 2004.

The wine list repays close attention, with bottles from £15 or £3.75 a glass.

Your Reviews of Crab at Chieveley, The

Andromeda Witchalls (15 April 2008)

I think the staff at the restaurant could dress up a bit smarter. Although we were the first ones at the restaurant at 7:15pm on a Friday, we got a table which had no table cloth and was too cramped. It was meant to be a nice evening after a busy week and my husband wanted to treat me to a nice meal, but we were disappointed. The fish was fresh but puddings did not taste good. The food was pricey and we were not happy to pay the service charge, but despite the optional clause it was automatically added to the bill. We have been to this restaurant before when the service was better but it seems like a lot has changed now.

Deano (17 March 2008)

My girl and I have been to the Crab on numerous occasions, both in the summer and just a few weeks ago and the food is always first class. I have been to many so called famous restaurants around the world, and use my experience at the Crab as my marker. The puddings are simply out of this world and although the menu in general is not cheap, it is well worth the expense.
