Crown & Garter, The

Strategically placed about ten minutes from the M4, J13/14 this traditional and chummy inn with restaurant and rooms gives ease of access to Hungerford, Newbury and the Racecourse. In the bar there is a vast inglenook and ancient beams as well as things that really matter like a stunning selection of local and guest real ales, malt whiskies and a sociable wine list.

You can eat in the bar, outside or in the restaurant, depending, each carrying its own brand of formality or otherwise. Start with natural smoked haddock topped with Welsh rarebit or oak smoked haddock with horseradish cream. There is always at least one fish of the day, and meat and poultry feature strongly with locally sourced venison sausages, pan fried breast of guinea fowl and half a roast duck with a brandy and fresh orange sauce.

Before you jump be sure to take a close look at the Thai selection which could include a very hot Thai red curry, a more medium Massamum, or a mild Malaysian satay containing peanuts, shrimp paste, coriander, curry leaves, ginger, garlic, mango and spices.

After which you might be conceding to the white peach soup with a raspberry sherbet, or just a good old classical warm treacle tart with vanilla ice cream - never fails to please.

A wonderful place for a chill-out/escape/discreet weekend, and if you must take your laptop you'll be delighted to find free Broadband on tap, even if your partner is not.
