Crown, The

153 Dovehouse Street, London, SW3 6LB

You will find pubs and you will find boutique hotels and restaurants, but it's not everywhere that you can find boutique pubs, but The Crown advocates this concept really well. Sometimes a designer touch and a lick of paint can make a place look so much better and that's what happened when Iain and Amelia Heggie took over in 2004; this combined with the camaraderie of diners make this Doverhouse Street venue a much sought after hang out for a pint or a full blown meal. Lunchtime sandwiches are delicious compositions of vivid flavours like the English with rare roast beef and fresh horseradish sauce, or the mimi le sardine with cream cheese and smoked salmon. The main menu bears traces of conventionality with moules frites, mayonnaise and crusty baguette, fish pie in a piquant sauce with a cheesy potato crust, and homemade chocolate brownie with a summer fruit coulis.

For a sip of something memorable try choosing between a Nicolas Potel Savigny-Les-Beaune and Domaine Robert-Denogent.
