Cuckoo Restaurant
1 Broad Street, Cuckfield, nr Haywards Heath, RH17 7LJ
Housed within a 17th century cottage, Cuckoo's interior mixes clean lines and white walls in contrast to the dark wood furniture. Owner Toby Erlam's passion for food and wine spurred him to traverse the globe in pursuit of a culinary adventure and his wealth of experience managing restaurants stands in good stead for his new venture. Starters of borlotti bean soup, Parmesan and olive oil; smoked haddock soufflé and salt and pepper squid with garlic saffron aioli could feature in their seasonally changing menu. Mains take in Sussex lamb chop with bubble and squeak, lamb kidney and mint jus, fillet of pork with gypsy stew and black pudding, pan-fried fillet of sea bass, olive oil mash and salsa rossa, or pan-fried skate wing with Roosevelt potatoes, samphire, olives and salsa Verde. For desserts try the warm pecan tart with clotted cream and maple syrup or the toffee and banana brownie. A carefully selected wine list incorporates classical varieties whilst also introducing new producers.

REVIEWS OF Cuckoo Restaurant
LC (5 February 2010)
I have driven past the Cuckoo many times and always wanted to visit, the opportunity arose one Sunday afternoon to celebrate my Mothers 65th Birthday. I was amazed when looking at the website what great value it was and when making my reservation, I spoke with the owner Toby who talked me through the set menu and reassured me of portion size which was definitely hearty! On arriving we were recognized and placed to our table without having to introduce ourselves, which was lovely! From that moment we had a wonderful lunch, the set menu was perfect, there was something for all five of us. The food itself was cooked to perfection and arrived piping hot. The wine list was also very good, supporting local vineyards. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere, the food and the company. If you like the idea of not rushing a meal, being waited on beautifully, wonderful food, beautiful surroundings, then The Cuckoo is ‘the place’ for you, we are already planning future visits with friends! Enjoy, you won't be disappointed, Toby and his team have got it right!
