Dans Le Noir?

Located in trendy Clerkenwell, the novel concept behind Dans le Noir is to rethink the notion of taste by serving food in complete darkness. Blind staff serve and guide diners in the main restaurant, with a lit bar and lounge for ordering and pre or post-dinner cocktails. Diners are encouraged to use the toilets before moving into the dark restaurant in order not to interrupt their experience. No one is allowed to move around in the dining area without the assistance of a guide.
The eclectic menu is designed to maximise such heightened sensory awareness; instead of listed dishes the restaurant provides surprise menus with considerations given to different tastes and dietary requirements including a number of vegetarian dishes.

It was a surprising experience to eat in the dark. I never though it could be so intense. I felt it a little bit oppressive in the beginning, but after a little while my vital space became bigger and bigger. My guide Mona was amazing; she told us how to help ourselves to avoid spreading wine everywhere. It was a very friendly experience, we were sitting beside some people I didn't know before going in, and we continued the evening together after we left the restaurant. I recommend this unique experience to those who want to learn more about themselves. You eat in the dark, but it opens your eyes to a lot of things.

My wife and I had a very interesting visit to the restaurant, somewhat surreal and totally random. It would have been more interesting if we had not met the people we were sitting with before taking our seats, thus expanding our experience still further. My biggest criticism is the amount of noise in the dining area, almost to the point we could not hear each other without shouting, which spoilt the whole experience. I would suggest some form of sound deadening material be used in the dining area, especially to reduce the echo? Secondly, the price of the wine is way over the top. Kept sensible, we would have bought more. Give it a try, it is totally different to anything you will have tried before and the food is very good but first have a drink in the pub next door. Shane, our guide, was brilliant, very attentive and good fun.
