David Bann

56-58 St Mary's Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1SX

If vegetarian food evokes staid stereotypes, the restaurant David Bann in St. Mary's Street banishes them with panache. Just off the Royal Mile, it takes guests on a vegetarian jaunt sweeping confidently through the globe, from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, via India and Thailand. Here, the stylish ambience with deep aubergine walls accented in silver and dark, minimalist seating portrays the contemporary face of vegetarianism. Bohemians as well as city slickers can take delight in the variety on offer. Dishes, rich with flavour and world-inspired, showcase the chef's creativity and present the diner with varied creations.  In chilli crêpe filled with butter and kidney beans, enjoy the way the spicy rich tomato chilli is complemented by guacamole, crème fraîche and chocolate sauce.

Sweet potato, cauliflower and cashewnut curry as well as beetroot, apple and Dunsyre blue soufflé similarly stimulate the palate with their assortment of flavours and ingredients.

You could also dine in more simple fashion with smoked mushroom and basil tortellini, gnocchi with watercress, cherry tomato and cheese crisps, salad of roasted and marinated vegetables with goat's cheese and pan fried tofu with plum sauce. With such fine fare meat is not missed, if only for a day.

Celebrate the occasion together with assiette of desserts - malt whisky pannacotta, raspberry and whisky chocolates, hot pear and passion fruit tarts with raspberry ice cream and pineapple sorbet, filo basket of warm orange caramel fruit with coconut rum sorbet or ginger and lime ice cream with ganache and meringue.

REVIEWS OF David Bann

Popper (7 March 2009)

I love David Bann's restaurant even though I'm a confirmed carnivore. There's no sign of hand-woven table cloths, shaggy waitresses with bolts through their noses or excruciating folky background dross. This is an elegant, relaxed, highly professional restaurant with delicious food at very reasonable prices. After the horrors of the Royal Mile it's a haven of good taste and enjoyment. Go.

Jim Gill (16 July 2008)

We really enjoyed the food but the portion sizes weren't that great, it was just okay. It could work out expensive if you’re not careful.
