Dining Room, The Description
If you have an inbuilt longing for the meals mother used to give you, coupled with some of the dishes that have become synonomous with a certain type of education in England, look no further. The Dining Room will amply meet your needs and even the surroundings are in keeping. Let me suggest a pot of double Gloucestershire cheese mixed with best ale and grainy mustard, melted into an agreeably pliable dip and well supplied with toasted soldiers to save your fingers. As you recover from this wonderful introduction contemplate, if I may make so bold, the steak and kindney pudding, each one steamed in an individual basin and rich with the aromas that emerges from this very British institution. But whatever you do leave room for the puddings, which are a veritable tour de force of gastronomic indulgence. Far be it from me to push you towards either the spotted dick or the treacle pudding, but you might do a deal with your companion (assuming it is not your physician) and get to savour some of each.

I was disappointed with The Dining Room when we visited it for a family meal on Sunday. The starters were mediocre. My Scottish scone with horseradish cream and smoked salmon was pretty horrible as the scone tasted stale and was very hard.
The main course was absolutely diabolical. My skate smelt nauseatingly of acrid ammonia, it actually hurt to put it in my mouth, and the smell was overpowering. After one mouthful I returned it to the waitress, who was lovely .She was attentive and helpful and I couldn't have asked for any better. A second skate wing was delivered after 25 minutes ,by which time the rest of the party had finished eating and it was even worse than before. It tasted positively poisonous and the smell was unbelievable. I didn't eat it and the waitress duly took the amount off the bill without being asked, as she was very professional and helpful.
The desserts were okay, but I was so put off by the skate that they would have had to have done a lot to impress me by that point. Apparently, the risotto was amazing.

Visited with the in-laws, hence I refrained from commenting to the management out of politeness. It took over one hour for the first course to arrive, without any explanation from the staff. Given that we all ate steak, a fast cook dish, this was inexcusable. Meat was definitely not "prime Scottish steak". All together poor, I was very disappointed as menu looked so good. Shame about the cramped seating too. Not to be repeated.
