Dragon-i

311-313 Hope Street, Glasgow, G2 3PT

Dragon-i has opened up in Glasgow with the express purpose of introducing the more discerning enthusiasts for Chinese food in Glasgow to the real McCoy. Which is fine. Except that I find myself wondering why it has taken so long. To assist in this worthy cause the services of a top secret chef from one of Malaysia's five-star hotels have been recruited and he, so we are told, is a man who takes no prisoners, in that he believes a good part of the usual tack you encounter in our much-loved Chinese restaurants is a cruel fabrication and that even some of the Chinese names they bear are thinly veiled expressions of contempt for those who consume within. I know nothing about any of this beyond a feeling in my bones that just occasionally I have tasted the Real Thing, fleetingly and enjoyably, and perhaps this is what the Anonymous Chef is all about.

Instead of those dishes we have been conditioned to cherish we are invited to consider such delicacies as duck breast with grilled bananas and goat's cheese, wrapped in seaweed.

It may be of course that the average citizen of Glasgow is more inclined to associate seaweed with trips 'doon the watter' but time will tell. Meanwhile my vote goes to anyone who is trying to improve the quality of Chinese food in Glasgow, or for that matter, anywhere in Britain.

REVIEWS OF Dragon-i

R. Miller (8 January 2006)

Following searching the web for some eating places to visit during our new year visit to Glasgow, I came across Dragon I, we booked for 8.30 on the Friday, I was surprised to find it quiet, although I suppose not everyone is dining out at New Year. The restaurant is well placed in the city centre just a stone’s throw off Sauchihall Street. We were met by the manager Susan Ho. although the menu choice is quite compact, it was full of very exciting and tempting dishes that I'd never heard of before especially in you normal Chinese restaurant, and we were soon to experience that this was not a normal Chinese restaurant.

Susan describes it as Creative Contemporary Cuisine, my partner started with Tiger Prawns with an orange and pineapple sauce and I had chicken stuffed with mango and cheese with salad and mango sauce, both starters were beautiful. Our mains were monkfish and a chilli sauce and sliced fillets of beef with a chilli sauce, and garlic flavoured rice, all washed down with a bottle of 14% house wine and a large bottle of water. We were both delighted with our meals and the bill came to £85, money well spent in our mind, just about as good as I've eaten in this type of cuisine. We will certainly be back next time we're in town, I can thoroughly recommend it, a great dining experience, with superb service, as I said it wasn't busy at all during our visit so I couldn't comment on how things might be if there was a full house.
