Drakes Restaurant

The Clock House, High Street, Ripley, GU23 6AQ

Chef Steve Drake, formerly of Drakes on the Pond, has now opened here as chef-patron in this restaurant (formerly Michel's) located in a handsome Queen Anne townhouse. Steve, who has worked with some of the UK's leading chefs, has a seasonally changing menu using only the finest of ingredients making everything himself from the bread down to the petit fours. The menu includes starters such as roasted langoustine with braised beef carpaccio and salmon and truffle mousse, a main course of lamb saddle cooked in a coriander and mint crumb, carrot cannelloni and a dessert of crème renversée with Granny Smith sorbet and dried apple tuile. There is a comprehensive wine list naturally majoring on France but encompassing the rest of Europe also including some New World Wines.

REVIEWS OF Drakes Restaurant

A C Edwards (14 February 2011)

We love Drake's and I was surprised to see that there are no recent reviews on the site. We always try to go for special occasions and usually have the tasting menu which is always brilliant. We also ask the sommelier to choose the wines for us which avoids disagreements on what to drink with each course. There is a fabulous walled garden where you can have a pre-lunch or dinner glass of champagne or post meal coffee and admire the gardener's handiwork. Steve's food has never disappointed - he uses seasonal ingredients and combines really unusual flavours but they always work. The service is polite, professional and unobtrusive. All in all a great experience!

perfidalbione (6 December 2004)

We were keen to try this after we had scrupulously avoided its previous incarnation, Michel's. The food was excellent however the ambience remains reminiscent of the Isle of Wight in the 70s and the service was something else - not bad, just very amateurish. The real shocker is the price: Drakes charges Chelsea/Knightsbridge prices thus making it rather poor value for money across the board. Worth going if you enjoy a surreal experience and have more money than sense.
