Drawing Room, The Description
A Georgian country house near Builth Wells in one of the most scenic parts of a country renowned for its natural beauty, built round a restaurant that strives to make the most of the local produce, should be a winner. Particularly when the attention to detail given to every part of the operation speaks of a meticulous approach.
A hotel it may be, but the overall impression is of a private home in which you are a welcome guest. How refreshing not to find a bar, but two elegant sitting rooms in which drinks are brought to you for relaxed attention. The house is not overly big, just three bedrooms and a restaurant for 20, so the country house party atmosphere is easy to drum up.
Although modern in approach there is a strong element of traditionalism in the cooking, witness game terrine with black pudding, quail egg and red onion and port marmalade. Amongst the main courses look for roasted guinea fowl en crepinette with byaldi and dauphinoise potatoes, or Penmincae Farm organic lamb.
Fixed Lunch
- £19.50 (2 courses) to £25 (3 courses)
Your Reviews of Drawing Room, The

Recently had the pleasure of attending a birthday party at the drawing room. An absolute delight! First course of parmesan cheese custard with Carmarthenshire ham with Caesar salad opened my taste buds to previous levels unreached! Fantastic main course of roast fillet of beef medium rare, technically cooked to perfection with a crisp almost exterior with a rainbow of pink to deep red inside the meat that was succulent tender and perfect. Served on a bed with mushrooms and dice veg, some wonderful and unsurpassed treats here and accompanying veg.
Sweet course lemon sabayon pine crust pastry tart with honey ice cream and vanilla sauce! Outstanding! Honey ice cream fantastic and with the sauce perfect. Two bottles of Rioja with meal and various drinks including vintage malts turned this into one of the greatest restaurant experiences of my life.
Beautiful cosy surrounds and brilliant food. I have wondered whether to submit this review because I don’t want too many others to experience what I have experienced in case it becomes too popular and I will never be able to dine there again, but that’s selfish of me!
If you want real quality in sumptuous comfort but with out feeling intimidated then this is the place. Congratulations to the Dawsons and their staff on a masterpiece.
