Dubh Prais Description
For many this is their first introduction to Scottish 'black pot'cooking and just to make the point the black pot itself is sat in a corner of this small and attractive Edinburgh basement. Many of the wonderful natural ingredients that exist in Scotland feature regularly on the menu, invoking some of the finest national dishes and taking the uninitiated well beyond the haggis and black pudding. James McWilliams, the chef proprietor is in charge of this particular black pot and his offerings are received with delight by ever-growing cognoscenti. All this - and more - is done at prices that are quite breath-taking in their kindness to the purse.

All I can say is ‘wow’! I'm a typical Yorkshire man demanding value for money and was delighted to pay that little extra for a first rate evening. The meal I had with my girlfriend in Dubh Prais was incredible. Every course had so much flavour, was presented and proportioned beautifully, and you couldn't help but savour every mouthful. I would, without doubt, recommend this restaurant. It has a beautifully pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, the service was excellent, not too intrusive yet leaving you feel far from ignored. The maître d' and the waitress always had time to spare a moment or two for a chat. We’ve taken a lifetime of memories and will be back for more whenever we're in Edinburgh.

What an amazing experience! After reading two good reviews on this site, my hubby and I decided to try it out. When we first arrived at the unassuming little entrance I wondered what would be in store for us but it was one of the best meals we’ve had. Every course was presented wonderfully, and the taste and smell were fantastic. The ambience of the place is intimate but friendly, and the service is very efficient without being too intrusive. We were given enough time after each course, plates were removed and glasses were refilled without fuss. The seafood broth was unbelievably tasty and fresh, as was the soup. We ordered the steak and venison - both cooked to perfection and tasty, with lovely fresh vegetables and roast potatoes. My husband had a Belgian chocolate cup - dark and bitter sweet chocolate mousse, whilst I had lemon shortcake - zingy lemon mousse on a sweet base. We ended the meal with coffee, served with homemade shortbread fingers and fudge, which were lovely. We only wish we lived nearer Dubh Prais as we would return often. Thank you for making our evening special.
