Although Dukes 92 (the 92nd lock on the Rochdale Canal is outside the door, before you ask) has a menu of mainly straightforward dishes which clearly have tremendous appeal, it seems to have gained principal fame for its ploughman's lunches that are of truly gargantuan proportions. One might have thought they would have been re-christened bargees' lunches, but perhaps that would not be historically correct. Be warned, do not over indulge whilst on the premises, lest a few false steps outside should precipitate you into the Canal, particularly as the place is renowned for becoming somewhat crowded.Modern British

A choice of two cheeses or a cheese and pâté with half a granary loaf is the standard fare for lunch and requires a good appetite to clear the plate. It is excellent with no frills, just quality ingredients. A draft beer of the day plus a choice of wine is worth the visit for an hour or two. My wife and I have returned to lunch there for over ten years as occasional visitors from the Fens. The atmosphere is very good although there is no music. We will be back in the summer.
