Duke's Head Putney Description

If ambience is important to you while dining out, The Duke's Head Putney Restaurant in Lower Richmond Road will surely impress. Offering a traditional setting with high ceilings, an original fireplace, polished wooden arches and ornate glasswork, the place affords a regally enchanting demeanour. If that's not enough, sit by the window and enjoy a spectacular view of the Thames while sipping on your drink from the extensive drinks list available. The experience is relaxing and the setting is perfect for ample conversation and laughter.

There's something on the menu for everyone. The aim is to provide a variety of tasty dishes prepared from fresh seasonal produce. Chef David Faunch ensures that only the finest ingredients are used in his kitchen and the result is an array of inventive preparations for a wide clientele. Begin with the seared 21 day organic beef fillet, followed by braised Surrey marsh pork belly or grilled fish of the day. For dessert, it's a tie between the New York style blueberry cheesecake and set vanilla cream served with rhubarb compote. Pick one of the dessert wines to go with it and your Duke's Head Putney experience is officially complete.

It was simply appalling. Three of us went for Sunday lunch and all three meals were poor. The roast dinner included a Yorkshire pudding with the consistency of uncooked pasta, cold overcooked vegetables and poor quality, exceptionally tough, beef. It took ages to get served so we persevered and ate around half of the plate. At the end of the meal our waitress asked what I thought of the meal so I was honest - and she said she'd ‘pass on the comments’. She returned 5 minutes later to inform me that they couldn't adjust the bill because I had failed to raise the matter when she did a ‘check-back’ i.e. asking for our feedback during the meal. Two problems here - we were not looking for an adjustment to the bill, and we had not received a check-back. However, the very fact that they have a 'no refund' rule if you don't complain early enough shows that they must have to manage a huge number of complaints. We won't be going back.

We booked in for a Christmas lunch and pre-ordered from the Christmas menu. The dining room was grand and elegant and views of the river lovely. The food however was terrible. This is pre-prepared, just heat up food and it tastes like it. The portions were very small - my turkey had one medium sized potato with it. On asking for bread we got two small baskets between 15 of us and it was too much trouble. We didn't get our coffees, which were on the 'set' menu and nearly all were left still hungry. I must stress, portions were not just on the small size - they were really, really small – it was very disappointing. I would recommend a visit to the bar for some drinks, which were fine, and then a visit to one of the good eateries nearby.
