Dunkley's Restaurant

Castle Ashby Station, Grendon Road, Whiston, Northampton, NN7 1NP

How about the unusual experience of dining in an eighteenth century goods shed? Dunkley's is just such a restaurant set in the heart of the beautiful Northamptonshire Countryside and is built around the erstwhile Castle Ashby Station. The sheds and carriages which lie alongside are on tracks that have been re-laid. After extensive refurbishment, the restaurant was opened to the public in 1984 and has been a popular destination since. This restaurant specialises in predominantly European food, with a few favourites from other geographies thrown in. While the staple dishes and desserts stay constant, the restaurant varies its menu not just between mid week and weekends, but actually offers a different menu each on Saturday and Sunday.

This restaurant specialises in predominantly European food, with a few favourites from other geographies thrown in. While the staple dishes and desserts stay constant, the restaurant varies its menu not just between mid week and weekends, but actually offers a different menu each on Saturday and Sunday. Little wonder then, they have a lot of regular diners.

Smoked haddock, salmon fish cakes with Hollandaise or chicken liver pâté with bacon and garlic are popular. Try the chicken Caesar that is char-grilled and served with a salad of mixed leaves, croutons, parmesan shavings and finished with a Caesar salad dressing.  The roasted loin of cod topped with a rich cheddar sauce or baby broad bean, pea and dolcelatte risotto with fresh parsley, are the other options for mains. During weekends, Thai chicken cakes and baked open mushrooms are in demand.

An impressive array of desserts are offered through the week, and one can have the profiterole heaven, apple crumble cheesecake, raspberry crème brûlée, or select from their cheese platter which is served attractively with grapes and celery.

So go ahead, enjoy a hearty meal in unusual surroundings, and soak in the quaint charm of Dunkley's.

REVIEWS OF Dunkley's Restaurant

Mick Y (3 July 2011)

I visited Dunkley's yesterday evening for the first time with friends who were celebrating their wedding anniversary. The quality, quantity and range of food offered was outstanding as was the service provided by friendly, helpful staff. We will certainly go again soon.

S O'Bee (29 December 2008)

I took my parents and my family to Dunkley's Restaurant on Saturday and was extremely unimpressed by the food, the décor and the complete lack of service. From the moment we walked in the door I knew we had made a mistake. The staff failed even to offer to take our coats or point out where we could leave them in the cloakroom. We were then ushered into a seating area in the bar and I sat with my 10 year old son looking at a children's menu covered in splattering of food. Our drink order was rushed to our table and we were rapidly ushered there too. Our starters were set out before we hardly had a chance to sit down. The waiting staff then advised us of a lack of fillets steaks to cover our order and changes had to be made. I sat in horror as I watched my father try to get his knife through his chicken cake starter and insisted that he brought it to the staff's attention. My son had changed his order due to the lack of fillet steaks to a mushroom risotto, which I had also chosen. It was heavy and almost inedible; neither of us could finish the meal although my son put on a brave face knowing his grandfather was paying for the meal. By the end of our meal at about 8.45 it became apparent that the members of staff were setting the tables for the next day's service and we were clearly in the way. As we were awaiting a taxi we retired to the bar area but it was clear that the staff were waiting to close the restaurant. We stood in the porch awaiting our taxi and the staff sat anxiously waiting for us to go. It was an extremely disappointing and over priced experience. The staff seemed completely disinterested by our disappointment.
