Ego Mediterranean Restaurant - Liverpool Description

One of a small chain of restaurants in the North West which have so far managed to retain the individuality of independence. If they can continue to do that and reap the benefits of joint management they will deserve all the success they can achieve.

At Ego the spirit of the Mediterranean has been invoked in a number of ways, not least by the décor. Ingredients are sourced with care, often directly from the Med and the menu changes seasonally to take advantage of the best that is available.

Such dishes as sardines, fresh of course, and a braise of chorizo and black pudding come across well, helped by staff who not only look as thought they are enjoying their work but also obviously know what they are about. A well thought out wine list with a number available by the glass.

Your Reviews of Ego Mediterranean Restaurant - Liverpool

Fabulous service coupled with a wonderful varied menu make this restaurant a big hit. Of an evening it can be very busy but the atmosphere is always relaxing and friendly whether you go for lunch or dinner. A big plus for our party was that the staff are very child friendly and the children’s menu was good. This restaurant is worthy of a visit any time!

The service is friendly enough on entering, but I wouldn’t find it worth while complaining about the food unless you really need to. The waitress did ask ‘is everything OK’ after serving the last dish, but didn’t wait for a response.

There is a distinct variance in the quality of food served at Ego – and this should be kept in mind - as at about £30 a head, it is directly competing with venues such as the Monroe (a fine gastro-pub) and (the somewhat cheaper!) Olive Press.

There was a small selection of vegetarian food (starters and main) – and myself and another diner in our party ordered the mushroom risotto. This was served at room temperature with rice that was distinctly ‘crunchy’ and a consistency that allowed it to stick to the plate at 90 degrees to the tablecloth. It is therefore not a dish I would recommend. In addition, the vegetarian dishes were also relatively expensive compared to the cost of the other main courses – particularly the steak dishes.

The chicken paella was of a slightly superior consistency to the mushroom risotto, although it was commented on that it was made with cubes of chicken rather than flakes(?).

Only one in our party ordered a mixed seafood dish - which had a stronger fragrance than he ‘would have liked’, suggesting some time between sea and plate. He also complained of ‘repetition’ afterwards.

Most of the food tasted heavily salted – so you might want to specify before hand if you have to control your salt intake.

They do serve a good selection of steak style dishes, and by all accounts the steaks (be they meat or fish) were done according to taste and served with a satisfying selection of vegetables. Curiously though, for our party – the same selection was served for the meat and the fish dishes…

The selection of wine was appropriate to the range in prices of food. Although they do like to ‘push’ the after dinner shots (particularly Sambuca), which can add somewhat to your bill!

Therefore, in my exp
