El Sabio is the story of a young couple's foray into tapas territory, and if you thought no one does tapas better than the Spaniards, then you may be prompted to think again as owners Attila and Viki Vanko are Hungarian! Diners find more than just tapas at this Eastgate Street venture, and the sense of cheerfulness and feeling of warmth usually associated with family-run places is instantly recognisable here.

The menu covers a lot of ground with special sections devoted to vegetarians and paellas, and of course an interesting line-up of tapas dishes featuring rabbit stew in a red wine sauce, and homemade hand-rolled pork and beef meatballs, served with a rich tomato sauce. Seafood offers some stiff competition as well with the fritura mixta, a combination of deep fried calamari, king prawns, swordfish and whitebait accompanied by real aioli.
