Elephant, The Description

Elephant opened in 2003, since when a cornucopia of reviews, press comment and enthusiastic critics have left no room for doubt that we are looking at a major new addition to the culinary delights of the South West.

Chef Simon Hulstone is quoted as saying that Devon and the West Country has a wonderful larder, giving him the ability to source some of the best ingredients possible. As the holder of more than 30 international gold medals he is well placed to make the most use such natural bounty.

In a fashionably smart dining room expect to find creamed Jerusalem artichoke soup with foie gras and an orange syrup, or traditional Devon hogs pudding with morel and a wild garlic ragout and an egg boiled at low temperature.

Amongst the classics on offer consider the grilled rib eye of South Devon beef with hand cut chips and home made ketchup. A fillet of red mullet with a saffron stock, brown lentils and roast celeriac is a masterpiece of flavours that compliment, though you may feel tempted to add a side order of their renowned roast potatoes.

The desserts open up another veritable minefield of temptation, with the attention of many focused on the bitter chocolate and olive oil truffle, with raspberry and red pepper jelly and a passion fruit coulis.

Their bar food menu is equally inspiring in its own way, with the Elephant sea food platter a suitably celebratory dish. A small and perfectly adequate wine list ensures a quick decision. Elephant should be an addition to your ones-to-watch list.

Your Reviews of Elephant, The

Simon Hulstone's delicious and creative cooking is an experience not to be missed. Today my husband and I had lunch in the Brasserie. We had a journey of just over an hour from our home to The Elephant but it was well worth our effort. We savoured each and every lovely mouthful of food. All dishes were beautifully presented and our waiter was able to answer our enthusiastic questions about recipes and food sourcing. We live near to Exeter and frequently have lunch at Michael Caines, Abode. The Elephant was, perhaps, even better than that worthy establishment. We look forward to our next visit.

My partner and I selected the tasting menu and were not disappointed. The Paignton crab with the watermelon salad and pink grapefruit jelly was delicate and delicious but it was the low temperature cooked duck egg with ham and a salted toffee pea soup that stole the show. The mains were Torbay brill - my favourite- it’s just fantastic, and a venison dish, which was a little too rich for me although the haunch and pumpkin pie was really good. Amongst the desserts I preferred the glazed lemon and passion fruit tart, one of the best I have been served with a luscious banana and passion fruit sorbet, the chocolate fondant again on the rich side for me. All in all the whole experience was fantastic and would recommend to anyone. The lady who served us was very friendly, knowledgeable and kindly assisted with the wine choices considering our likes and dislikes and not just what is best for the dish. It's good value; we can’t wait for next time.
