Elm Hill Brasserie

2 Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HN

Elm Hill Brasserie embraces the very best fresh, locally sourced produce to create seasonally inspired menus of classic French food. Managed by the chef/owner, Simon Turner, and his brother James, who runs Front of House, the brasserie has no 'airs or graces', ensuring that the focus is on creating delicious food, delivered in a warm, friendly and unfussy environment. Located on what is often described as the most famous historic street in Norwich, the Brasserie occupies a corner plot where Elm Hill crosses Princes Street. From the huge windows you will notice the tip of the Cathedral spire towering above the surrounding medieval buildings. Meat, fish, vegetables and fish all come from celebrated local providers and the menus change regularly and are kept short to reflect the best ingredients of the time.

Meat, fish, vegetables and fish all come from celebrated local providers and the menus change regularly and are kept short to reflect the best ingredients of the time. There is no such thing as a typical menu. As examples, during the summer months, you could find starters of soupe au pistou, Cromer crab soufflé, risotto of broad bean with 12 hour slow roast belly pork and a dish of pan fried calf's liver. For main you might be tempted by the Cromer lobster thermidor, Shropham reared rump steak, haddock served with samphire, roast red pepper and hollandaise sauce or the loin of pork with thyme and basil crust.

At Elm Hill Brasserie the cheese is treated as an institution and will be talked about long after the board is empty, whilst desserts are kept classic - think crème brûlée, nectarines poached in Monbazillac dessert wine and tarte au citron.

The wines are selected personally by the Chef and his team, to match the food, the season and to reflect the classic French nature of the restaurant. Elm Hill Brasserie offers pre-theatre bookings by arrangement and a well-priced set lunch and dinner menu Tuesday to Saturday.

REVIEWS OF Elm Hill Brasserie

K Kennedy (28 May 2010)

We have been going regularly to the Elm Hill Brasserie since we moved to Norwich two years ago. It is by far the best choice of independent in the city. The location is very pretty and the staff are excellent. The food is the main draw though. The menu changes frequently enough for us to visit fairly often. On my last visit I had a stunning cheese and spinach souffle - so perfect I actually felt like ordering a second portion. For the main I had a beautifully cooked dish of lamb with tomato and fennel. One note to make is that meat here is usually cooked to pink so ask if you would like it better cooked. They do always ask how you would like your steak cooked. To finish I would say that this place is deserving of its brilliant reputation and is always the perfect choice whether you are going for a special occasion or you are popping in on your own as I see people often do. Also my husband uses it to take business his clients too. Worth noting is that they are now open on Sunday’s and do a simple, delicious and not expensive set menu. Vive la France - In a pretty corner of Norwich!

Mary (24 October 2008)

I took advantage of the lunchtime offer; A main course with a glass of wine for £8.95. There was a choice of two dishes, meat or fish. I had the fish with risotto and what a disappointment it was. It did not look particularly appetising and wasn't as described. Instead of prawns I was given four mussels, which I do not like. It was a very small portion, more like a starter or children's portion. The risotto was watery and flavourless, nothing like the real thing which is comfort food of the first order. I expressed my criticism to a member of staff, but as my friend was paying I did not want to make a fuss. My friend's choice of the steak and fries was much better, but I still consider the lunchtime offer overpriced. The members of staff were very pleasant, and in the evening the candlelight and more customers gave the place a nice ambience. We would have liked a dessert, but were afraid the dishes on offer would in no way resemble their description on the menu.
