Elm Hill Brasserie Description
Elm Hill Brasserie embraces the very best fresh, locally sourced produce to create seasonally inspired menus of classic French food. Managed by the chef/owner, Simon Turner, and his brother James, who runs Front of House, the brasserie has no 'airs or graces', ensuring that the focus is on creating delicious food, delivered in a warm, friendly and unfussy environment.
Located on what is often described as the most famous historic street in Norwich, the Brasserie occupies a corner plot where Elm Hill crosses Princes Street. From the huge windows you will notice the tip of the Cathedral spire towering above the surrounding medieval buildings.
Meat, fish, vegetables and fish all come from celebrated local providers and the menus change regularly and are kept short to reflect the best ingredients of the time. There is no such thing as a typical menu. As examples, during the summer months, you could find starters of soupe au pistou, Cromer crab soufflé, risotto of broad bean with 12 hour slow roast belly pork and a dish of pan fried calf's liver. For main you might be tempted by the Cromer lobster thermidor, Shropham reared rump steak, haddock served with samphire, roast red pepper and hollandaise sauce or the loin of pork with thyme and basil crust.
At Elm Hill Brasserie the cheese is treated as an institution and will be talked about long after the board is empty, whilst desserts are kept classic - think crème brûlée, nectarines poached in Monbazillac dessert wine and tarte au citron.
The wines are selected personally by the Chef and his team, to match the food, the season and to reflect the classic French nature of the restaurant. Elm Hill Brasserie offers pre-theatre bookings by arrangement and a well-priced set lunch and dinner menu Tuesday to Saturday.

This place is a real find! It's French - I took my wife there recently and enjoyed some of the most delicious food I've ever eaten, not just in Norwich, but anywhere. It's very simple and seems to concentrate on flavour and local produce rather than on making everything look pretty on the plate. I had a beautiful risotto and my wife had a chilled soup, which she'd never tried before but raved about. I followed with the steak - which was quite honestly the best I've ever had. The waiter explained that it came from a local butcher and gave me a leaflet so that I can order meat from him myself. My wife had a dish of skate wing with caper butter and green beans. The skate wing was excellent - perfectly cooked, very meaty and flavoured beautifully. I didn't have dessert but went for the cheese and again the waiter explained that all the cheeses were sourced from France and matured downstairs, but again bought locally - it was the best cheeseboard I've eaten at a restaurant in England. My wife had nectarine poached in wine, which I didn't get to taste but she assured me was very good. I don't usually write reviews, but I had to make an exception for this place. We will definitely be returning.

This is a real brasserie, rare in the UK, and delivers consistently. It has a small but lively dining room which is elegant and a good spot to pass an evening. The menu changes frequently and all the ingredients appear to be locally sourced. You can always get a steak but the sauce changes, and there is always a simply cooked fish from the local market on offer. The wine list is excellent, the chef/owner clearly knows his stuff – the staff were able to make recommendations with help from the chef, based on an order.
On my last visit I had the subtle Petatou - a small potato cake flavoured with black olives and topped with goat cheese. I had roast salmon served with a beautifully light saffron butter and an unusual gnocchi parisienne for the main course. Finally I had what I believe is the first real potion of profiteroles I have seen in Norwich. They were fresh, not frozen with real homemade chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. I've been there many times now and have never been disappointed.
